An
amusing article with some short stories of email mistakes.
Part 2,
Seven Rules for Gaffe-Free E-Mails,
should be required reading for all Internet users.
Mailing Lists
I'm a big fan of email lists. An email list is a way to either receive
information from a central source (such as a humor mailing, where a joke
is sent out to all the members of the list) or to communicate with people
who have a common interest (such as a technical discussion list where
you raise questions and provide answers). Sometimes the latter kind of
list can function as the former-- e.g. if you don't "speak" on a list,
but read it for information, for you it's like receiving information only.
I subscribe to a bunch of lists, and I know you care deeply, so I
am sharing information about some of them here.
Receive-only
- Humor
- There are tons of humor lists out there. I subscribe to several:
- Aiken: A fellow with the pseudonym of "Aiken" publishes a number
of fun lists, which you can find described at the
Aiken Drum's website.
Among them I enjoy "A Laugh a Day" and "Daily Trivia."
- Jerry Lerman's
"Bonehead of the Day Awards" list. Read about stupid
things other people do, so you don't have to think about
your own.
- Randy Cassingham's
"This Is True" -- similar to the Bonehead of the Day,
provides a weekly mailing of notes about oddball things
happening around the world, with Randy's acerbic comments
and editorials to augment them. There's a free version
and a for-pay "Premium" version-- the Premium edition is
well worth the meager price. Both versions include a weekly
"honorary unsubscribe" -- profiling a perhaps not-so-well-known
person who has recently passed away but whose life included a
significant contribution to society.
- Other
- Random stuff
- Randy Cassingham's
Heroic Stories
list provides a counterpoint to those stories that just
make you want to shake your head (for example, from his
"This is True" list). This list features reports and
commentaries about ordinary people doing good things in
everyday life- perhaps inspiring us to follow suit.
- Bob Burg's
"Winning Without Intimidation" list is one of those
positive self-image, salesy kind of things, but I like it
anyway.
- The Thirty Second Wine Advisor: a daily newsletter that's
an adjunct to Robin Garr's
Wine Lover's Page.
- Michael Quinion's
World Wide Words weekly newsletter, each issue filled with
interesting commentary about the English language.
