むかし、この国は深い森におおわれ、
Mukashi, kono kuni wa fukai mori ni ooware,
A long, long time ago, this country was overrun by deep forests;

そこには太古からの神々がすんでいた。
soko ni wa taiko kara no kamigami ga sunde ita.
within these forests lived the gods of old.


1. Hidden Village of the Emishi1, Northeast Japan, in the Muromachi Era2

[Ashitaka rides his mount, Yakkuru3, along a forest path towards the village.]

[アシタカ] Ashitaka:

ヤックル
Yakkuru...

[He meets three village girls in a field.]

[カヤ] Kaya:

兄さまー
Ani-sama!6

Ashitaka:

ちょうど良かった。
Choudo yokatta.
Good timing.

ヒイ様が、みな村へ戻れと
Hii-sama ga, mina mura e modore to
Hii-sama says everyone is to go back to the village.

Kaya:

じいじも、そう言うの
Jii-ji mo, sou iu no
Jii-ji also says so.

Ashitaka:

じいじか!?
Jii-ji ka!?
Jii-ji?!

Kaya:

山がおかしいって......
Yama ga okashii tte......
He said that the mountains are strange......

[少女B] (Shoujo B) Girl B:

鳥達がいないの
Tori-tachi ga inai no
The birds have all disappeared.

[少女A] (Shoujo A) Girl A:

ケモノ達も......
Kemono-tachi mo......
And all the creatures......

Ashitaka:

そうか 。
Sou ka.
I see.

じいじの所へ行ってみよう。
Jii-ji no tokoro e itte miyou.
I'm going to check on Jii-ji.

みんなは早く戻りなさい
Minna wa hayaku modori nasai
Everyone hurry back to the village!

[三人] (San-nin) The three {Girls}:

ハイ
Hai
Yes sir!

[Ashitaka climbs a lookout tower near the village, where Jii-ji is keeping watch.]

Ashitaka:

何か来る......
Nanika kuru......
Something's coming......

じいじ、なんだろう?
Jii-ji, nan darou?
Jii-ji, what can it be?

[山おじ] Yama-oji {AKA Jii-ji}:

判らぬ。人ではない
Wakaranu.  Hito dewa nai
I don't know.  It's not human.

Ashitaka:

村の方は、ヒイ様が皆を呼び戻している
Mura no hou wa, Hii-sama ga mina o yobi modoshite iru
Back at the village, Hii-sama is calling for everyone to return.

Yama-oji:

来おった......
Kiotta......
It comes......

タタリ神だ!
Tatari-gami da!
It's a Tatari-gami!

Ashitaka:

タタリ神?!
Tatari-gami?!

ヤックル、逃げろ!!
Yakkuru, nigero!!
Yakkuru, run!!

[The Tatari-gami ("Curse God") knocks down the watchtower.  Ashitaka grabs Jii-ji and leaps with him into the nearest treetop.]

Ashitaka:

村の方へ行く!!
Mura no hou e iku!!
It's headed towards the village!!

襲う気だ
Osou ki da
It's going to attack!

Yama-oji:

アシタカ、
Ashitaka,

タタリ神に手を出すな。
Tatari-gami ni te o dasu na.
Don't touch the Tatari-gami.

呪いをもらうぞ!!
Noroi o morau zo!!
You'll be cursed if you do!!

Ashitaka:

ヤックル
Yakkuru!

[Ashitaka rides Yakkuru in front of the Tatari-gami.]

Ashitaka:

鎮まれ! 鎮まりたまえ!
Shizumare!  Shizumari tamae!
Calm!  Calm down!

さぞかし名のある山の主と見受けたが、
Sazokashi na no aru yama no nushi to miuketa ga,
Surely you are to all appearances a mountain god of name,

何故そのように荒ぶるのか?
naze sono you ni araburu no ka?
but why do you rampage like this?

[The Tatari-gami sees the three girls, and turns towards them.]

Girl B:

おばけ
Obake
Monster!

Kaya:

村へ!
Mura e!
To the village!

Ashitaka:

止まれェ!。 なぜ我が村を襲う!
Tomare!  Naze waga mura o osou!
Stop!  Why do you attack our village?!

やめろォー  鎮まれー
Yamero―   Shizumare―
Stop it!  Calm down!

[Girl B slips and falls; Kaya draws her sword and prepares to defend them.]

Kaya:

しっかり!!
Shikkari!!
Hold on!!

[Seeing that the girls are in danger, Ashitaka shoots an arrow through one of the Tatari-gami's red "eyes."  The monster stops; Ashitaka attempts to keep himself and Yakkuru between the monster and the village while the girls flee.]

Ashitaka:

[To the girls]

早く!
Hayaku!
Hurry!

[Suddenly the Tatari-gami's tentacles explode into action.  Although Yakkuru gallops away from the Tatari-gami, Ashitaka's right arm gets caught by the Tatari-gami's black feelers/snakes.  Despite this, Ashitaka manages to shoot an arrow through the Tatari-gami's forehead.  The Tatari-gami collapses, and its black "snakes" gradually disappear, revealing a huge Boar God underneath.]

[男A] (Otoko A) Man A:

倒した!!
Taoshita!!
He beat it!!

Kaya:

兄さまー
Ani-sama!

[男C] (Otoko C) Man C:

ヒイ様を早く
Hii-sama o hayaku
Get Hii-sama, hurry!

[男B] (Otoko B) Man B:

火を絶やすな
Hi o tayasu na
Don't let the fire go out!

[Ashitaka falls off Yakkuru in pain.]

Kaya:

兄さま!
Ani-sama!

Ashitaka:

カヤ、触れるな。
Kaya, fureru na.
Kaya, don't touch.

ただの傷ではない
Tada no kizu dewa nai
It's not an ordinary wound.

Man A:

アシタカが手傷を負った! ヒイ様は
Ashitaka ga te kizu o otta!  Hii-sama wa
Ashitaka is wounded!  Where's Hii-sama?

[ヒイ] Hii:

みな、それ以上近づいてはならぬぞ
Mina, sore ijyou chikazuitewa nara nu zo
Everyone, you mustn't get any closer!

Kaya:

ヒイ様
Hii-sama!

Hii:

この水を、ゆっくりかけておやり
Kono mizu o, yukkuri kakete oyari
Pour this water slowly onto the wound.

Kaya:

ハイ
Hai
Yes ma'am.

Hii:

[To the boar]

いずこよりいまし、荒ぶる神とは存ぜぬも、
Izuko yori imashi, araburu kami to wa zonzenu mo,
Though I know not from whence thou came, rampaging god,

かしこみ、かしこみ申す
kashikomi, kashikomi mousu
I would humbly and respectfully speak to thee.

この地に塚を築き、あなたの御霊をお祭りします。
Kono chi ni tsuka o kizuki, anata no mitama o omatsuri shimasu.
We will build a mound on this place, and observe a festival in honor of thy departed spirit.

恨みを忘れ、鎮まりたまえ
Urami o wasure, shizumari tamae
Forget thine anger, and be calmed.

[猪] (Inoshishi) Boar:

汚らわしい人間共め。
Kegarawashii ningendomo me.
You damned filthy humans.

我が苦しみと憎しみを知るがいい......
Waga kurushimi to nikushimi o shiru ga ii......
You will know well my suffering and hatred......

[The boar's flesh dissolves.]


[That night in the village shrine, Hii, Ashitaka, and several of the village elders are sitting.  One wall of the shrine is a cliffside which bulges into the room; this has become a shintai (神体) or "god-body" (an object of worship in a Shinto shrine in which the ghost of a deity is believed to dwell).  Beneath the shintai is a small altar flanked by flickering lamps.  Hii and Ashitaka sit facing each other on either side of the altar.  Hii is fortune-telling by casting small pebbles on a cloth mat in front of her; Ashitaka sits upright, hiding his resignation.]

Hii:

さて、困った事になった。
Sate, komatta koto ni natta.
Well, this has become a worrisome situation.

かのシシは遥か西の国からやって来た。
Kano shishi wa haruka nishi no kuni kara yatte kita.
That boar turned up from a land in the far west.

深傷の毒に気ふれ、
Fukade no doku ni kii fure,
Driven mad by the poison of his mortal wounds,

身体はくさり、
karada wa kusari,
his flesh rotting away,

走り走る内に呪いを集め、
hashiri hashiru uchi ni noroi o atsume,
he ran and ran towards here, accumulating curses,

タタリ神になってしまったのだ
Tatari-gami ni natte shimatta no da
until finally he became a Tatari-gami.

Ashitaka-hiko ya

Ashitaka:

ハイ
Hai
Yes ma'am.

Hii:

皆に、右腕を見せなさい
Mina ni, migi ude o mise nasai
Show everyone your right arm.

Jii-ji:

ヒイ様
Hii-sama!

Hii:

アシタカヒコや、
Ashitaka-hiko ya,
My dear Ashitaka-hiko,

そなたには自分の運命を見据える覚悟があるかい?
sonata niwa jibun no sadame o misueru kakugo ga aru kai?
are you prepared to gaze at your own destiny?

Ashitaka:

ハイ。
Hai.
Yes ma'am.

タタリ神に矢を射る時、心を決めました
Tatari-gami ni ya o iru toki, kokoro o kimemashita
I decided the moment I shot my arrow at the Tatari-gami.

Hii:

うーむ...... その痣はやがて骨までとどいて
Uumu...... sono aza wa yagate hone made todoite
Hmm...... that wound will eventually reach your bone,

そなたを殺すだろう
sonata o korosu darou
and probably will kill you.

Yama-oji:

...... ヒイ様、何とかなりませぬか?
...... Hii-sama, nantoka narimasenu ka?
...... Hii-sama, isn't there anything that we can do?

Man A:

アシタカは村を守り、乙女らを守ったのですぞ!!
Ashitaka wa mura o mamori, otomera o mamotta no desu zo!!
Ashitaka saved our village and protected our girls!!

Man B:

ただ死を待つしかないというのは......
Tada shi o matsu shika nai to iu no wa......
To only sit and wait for death......

Hii:

誰にも運命は変えられない。
Dare ni mo sadame wa kaerarenai.
No one can change destiny.

だが、ただ待つか、自らおもむくかは決められる
Daga, tada matsu ka, mizukara omomuku ka wa kimerareru
However, it is up to him to decide whether to just wait, or to proceed for himself.

見なさい
Mi nasai...
Look...

あのシシの身体に食い込んで いたものだよ。
Ano shishi no karada ni kuikonde ita mono da yo
This is the thing that ate into that boar's body.

骨を砕き、はらわたを引き裂き、むごい苦しみを与えたのだ。
Hone o kudaki, harawata o hikisaki, mugoi kurushimi o ataeta no da
It smashed his bones, tore up his guts, giving him cruel pain and suffering.

さもなくばシシがタタリ神などになろうか......
Samonakuba shishi ga Tatari-gami nado ni narou ka......
Otherwise, would the boar have become the likes of a Tatari-gami?......

西の国で何か不吉な事が起こっているのだよ。
Nishi no kuni de nanika fukitsu na koto ga okotte iru no da yo.
There is something ominous happening in the western lands.

その地に赴き、曇りのない眼で物事を見定めるなら、
Sono chi ni omomuki, kumori no nai manako de monogoto o misadameru nara,
Going there, to ascertain everything with unclouded eyes,

或いはその呪いを断つ道が見つかるかもしれぬ
arui wa sono noroi o tatsu michi ga mitsukaru kamo shirenu
you may possibly discover a way to sever that curse.

Ashitaka:

ハイ
Hai
Yes ma'am.

[老人] (Roujin) Old Man:

大和との戦さに敗れ、
Yamato to no ikusa ni yabure,
Defeated in the war against the Yamato regime,

この地に潜んでから五百有余年
kono chi ni hisonde kara go-hyaku-yuuyo-nen
we have been hidden away in this place for more than 500 years.

今や大和の王の力は萎え、将軍共の牙も折れたと聞く。
Imaya Yamato no ou no chikara wa nae, shogun-domo no kiba mo oreta to kiku.
Now we've heard that the power of the Yamato king has withered, and that even the fangs of the Shoguns were broken.

だが、我が一族の血もまた衰えた。
Daga, waga ichizoku no chi mo mata otoroeta.
Yet, the bloodline of our clan also weakens.

この時に、一族の長となるべき若者が西へ旅立つのは定めかもしれぬ
Kono toki ni, ichizoku no osa to naru beki wakamono ga nishi e tabi-datsu no wa sadame kamo shirenu
It may be unchangeable fate that, at this time, the young man who should have become our leader departs to the west.

[Ashitaka cuts off his mage (the topknot of his hair), and places it on the shrine's altar.5]

Hii:

掟に従い見送らぬ。
Okite ni shitagai miokuranu.
According to our rules, we may not see you off.

健やかにあれ
Sukoyaka ni are
I wish you well.

[Ashitaka leaves the shrine, alone.


Ashitaka prepares to leave the village, with Yakkuru as his only companion.]

Kaya:

兄さま
Ani-sama!

Ashitaka:

カヤ、見送りは禁じられているのに......
Kaya, miokuri wa kinjirarete iru no ni......
Kaya, they forbid any farewells......

Kaya:

おしおきは受けます。
Oshioki wa ukemasu.
I shall accept punishment.

どうか、これを私の代わりにお伴させて下さい
Douka, kore o watashi no kawari ni otomo sasete kudasai
I beg you, please accept this gift as a substitute for my presence!

 Ashitaka:

大切な玉の小刀じゃないか......
Taisetsu na gyoku no kogatana ja nai ka......
Isn't this your precious crystal knife?6

Kaya:

お守りするよう息を吹き込めました。
Omamori suru you iki o fukikomemashita.
I blew a breath upon it to make a good-luck charm.

いつもいつも、カヤは兄さまを思っています。
Itsumo itsumo, Kaya wa ani-sama o omotte imasu.
I will always be thinking about you, always.

きっと......  きっと......
Kitto......  kitto......
Surely......  surely......

Ashitaka:

私もだ。
Watashi mo da.
I will, also.

いつもカヤを思おう
Itsumo Kaya o omoou
I will always think of you, Kaya.

[Ashitaka rides quickly out of the village; Kaya stares after him.]


2. Near a Mountain Village and a Town Market (Central Japan?)

[Ashitaka continues his lonely journey.  One day, he comes down from a mountain, and sees a group of villagers, including a strange-looking Buddhist priest or monk, being attacked by a group of Samurai and soldiers.]

Ashitaka:

戦さ......?
Ikusa......?
(A war......?)

[雑兵A] (Zouhyou A) Ordinary Soldier A:

ウヌラー
Unura-
You wretches!

[雑兵C] (Zouhyou C) Ordinary Soldier C:

回り込め
Mawari kome
Encircle them!

[兵] (Tsuwamono) Soldier:

[noticing Ashitaka]

ヤロォ、カブトクビだぁ
Yaroo, kabuto kubi daa
You bastard, it's a helmeted head!7

[Archers on foot attack Ashitaka.  Ashitaka and Yakkuru start to make a run for it.]

[雑兵共] (Zouhyou-kyou) Ordinary Soldiers:

【もどれーっ】
[Modore-]
[Come back!]

勝負! 勝負!
Shoubu!  Shoubu!
Fight!  A contest!

[Ashitaka sees Ordinary Soldier B about to slaughter a woman.]

Ashitaka:

ヤメローー
Yamero--
STOP IT!

[Ashitaka shoots an arrow through the hilt of the soldier's sword in order to knock it out of the soldier's hands.  In the instant Ashitaka shoots, the mark on his right arm aches violently, as if the Tatari-gami's "snakes" are still on his arm.   He shoots the arrow with such strength that it rips the arms of the soldier off, pinning them to a tree.]

Ordinary Soldier B:

へ......!?
He......!?
Huh......?!

ワァッ
Waa
Ugh!

Ashitaka:

なんだ、この腕は
Nan da, kono ude wa
(What the hell is up with this arm?!)

[弓騎兵] (Kyuu-kihei) Mounted Archer:

逃がさぬぞ、見参!
Nigasanu zo, kenzan!
He won't get away, I see him!

Ashitaka:

押し通る、邪魔するな!!
Oshitooru, jama suru na!!
I'm coming through, don't hinder me!!

[Another of Ashitaka's arrows decapitates the Mounted Archer.  Ashitaka and Yakkuru disappear into the forest.]

[侍] Samurai:

鬼だ......
Oni da......
It's a demon......


[After the incident, Ashitaka washes his right arm at a waterfall.]

Ashitaka:

痣が濃くなっている......
Aza ga kokunatte iru......
The wound's becoming darker......


[Later, at a town market, the strange monk from the village battle is eating at a market booth.]

[ジコ坊] Jiko-Bou:

ふん、なんとも、白湯みたいなめしだな......
Fun, nantomo, sayu-mitai na meshi da na......
Oh damn, this tastes like hot water......

[He sees Ashitaka dealing with a rice merchant.]

おっ、いた、いた
O, ita, ita
Oh, there he is!

Ashitaka:

これでよいか
Kore de yoi ka
Will this do?

[米売り女] (Kome-uri onna) Rice Vendor Woman:

何だい、こりゃ。
Nan dai, korya.
What the hell is this?

おアシじゃないじゃないか
Oashi ja nai ja nai ka
This isn't money.

おアシがなきゃ米を返しな
Oashi ga nakya kome o kaeshi na
If you don't have money, then give back the rice.

Jiko-Bou:

待て、待て、拙僧がみてやろう
Mate, mate, sessou ga mite yarou
Wait, wait, let this monk take a look.

ン......!?  おっ!!  これは......
N......!?  O!!  Kore wa......
Hmm......?!  Oh!!  This is......

女、これは砂金の大粒だぞ
Onna, kore wa sakin no ootsubu da zo
Woman, this is a sizable gold nugget!

そうだ、ゼニがいいなら代金はワシが払おう。
Sou da, zeni ga ii nara daikin wa washi ga haraou.
So, if you'd prefer cash, I'd pay the bill.

【そのかわり】 これをゆずってくれ
[Sono kawari] kore o yuzutte kure
[In return,] please hand over this.

[ガヤ] (Gaya) Crowd {of people talking}:

砂金だと
Sakin da to
He said it was gold!

砂金!?
Sakin!?
Gold?!

Jiko-Bou:

皆の衆、この近くに両替屋はおらんかの?  ア?  おらんか?
Mina no shu, kono chikaku ni ryougae-ya wa oran ka no?  A?  Oran ka?
Everyone, is there a money house around here?  Or not?

拙僧の見るところ、米一俵か、いや、三俵か......
Sessou no miru tokoro, kome ippyou ka, iya, san-pyou ka......
As far as I can see, it's worth a bag of rice, no, three bags......

Crowd:

三俵!?
San-pyou!?
Three bags?!

へェー、うらやましい
Hee-, urayamashii
Eh, enviable...

[In the confusion, Ashitaka disappears into the crowd.]

Jiko-Bou:

アッ、ちょっと待ちなさい
A, chotto machi nasai
Hey, wait a minute!

[Jiko-Bou makes to follow Ashitaka.]

Rice Vendor Woman:

返しとくれ、あたしんだから
Kaeshi to kure, atashi n da kara
Give that back to me, it's mine!

[Jiko-Bou catches up with Ashitaka outside the town.]

Jiko-Bou:

オーイ。 そう、急がれるな
O-i.  Sou, isogareru na
Hey!  So, not so fast!

イヤ、礼などと申す気はない。
Iya, rei nado to moosu ki wa nai.
No need to thank me.

礼を言いたいのは拙僧の方でな。
Rei o iitai no wa sessou no hou de na.
I'm the one who wants to thank you.

田舎侍の小競り合いに巻き込まれた折、そなたのお蔭で助かったのだ
Inaka zamurai no kozeriai ni makikomareta ori, sonata no okage de takatta no da
When I was dragged into that backwater samurai skirmish, I was rescued due to your assistance.

イヤァ、鬼神のごときとは正にあれだな
Iyaa, kijin no gotoki to wa masa ni are da na
My, you surely were just like a fierce god.

[Ashitaka gives Jiko-Bou a sharp look, then out of the corner of his eye sees three suspicious-looking people from the town following them at a distance.]

Jiko-Bou:

ホッホッ、気づいたか。
Ho ho, kizuita ka.
Hmm, so you noticed?

人前で砂金など見せるとなァ
Hito mae de sakin nado miseru to naa
It's what happens when you wave the likes of a gold nugget in people's faces.

まことに、人の心のすさむこと、麻のごとしだ
Makoto ni, hito no kokoro no susamu koto, asa no gotoshi da
Indeed, people's hearts harden and become rough like hemp.

寝こみを襲われてもつまらぬ。
Nekomi o osowarete mo tsumaranu.
It'd be rather boring if we're attacked in our sleep.

走るか......  エ?
Hashiru ka......  E?
Shall we run?......  Eh?


[That night, near the ruins of a village, Jiko-Bou is cooking Ashitaka's rice.]

Jiko-Bou:

ホオ......、イノシシがタタリ神になったか......
Hoo......, inoshishi ga Tatari-gami ni natta ka......
Hmm...... so a boar became a Tatari-gami......

Ashitaka:

足跡をたどって来たのですが、
Ashi-ato o tadotte kita no desu ga,
I followed his footprints,

里に降りた途端判らなくなりました
sato ni orita totan wakaranaku narimashita
but just as I descended to the village, I lost him.

Jiko-Bou:

そりゃ、そうだろう。
Sorya, sou darou.
That's to be expected.

そこらを見なさい
Sokora o mi nasai
Look over there.

この前来た時には、ここにもそれなりの村があったのだがナァ。
Kono mae kita toki ni wa, koko nimo sorenari no mura ga atta no daga naa.
There used to be a village the last time I visited.

洪水か地滑りか...... さぞ、沢山死んだろうに
Kouzui ka jisuberi ka... sazo, takusan shindarou ni
Floods, mudslides...... no doubt, many people must have died.

戦さ、行き倒れ、病に飢え、
Ikusa, ikidaore, yamai ni ue,
War, poverty, sickness, starvation;

人界は恨みをのんで死んだ亡者でひしめいとる。
jinkai wa urami o nonde shinda mouja de hishimeitoru.
the human world is crowded with the dead, who died swallowing their resentment.

タタリというならこの世はタタリそのもの。
Tatari to iu nara kono yo wa tatari sono mono.
If you're talking about a curse, then this world is a curse in itself.

[Tastes his cooking.]

フーフーフー、うん、うまい
Fuufuufuu, un, umai
Ummm, yeah, delicious.

Ashitaka:

里へ下りたのは間違いでした。
Sato e orita no wa machigai deshita.
I made a mistake going down to the village.

二人もあやめてしまった
Futari** mo ayamete shimatta
I murdered two people in the process.

Jiko-Bou:

いや、お陰で拙僧は助かった。
Iya, okage de sessou wa tasukatta.
No, because of you I was saved.

You must eat first.

人はいずれ死ぬ
Hito wa izure shinu
People die anyhow.

おそいか早いかだけだ
Osoi ka hayai ka dake da
It just comes sooner or later.

ホウ、雅な椀だな
Hou, miyabi na wan da na
Hmm, what an elegant bowl.

そなたを見ていると、古い書に伝わる古の民を思い出す
Sonata o mite iru to, furui sho ni tsutawaru inishie no tami o omoidasu
Looking at you, it reminds me of a people of ancient times, as passed down in old writings.

東の果てに、アカシシにまたがり、石のヤジリを使う
Higashi no hate ni, Akashishi ni matagari, ishi no yajiri o tsukau
勇壮なるエミシの一族ありとな......
yusou naru Emishi no ichizoku ari to na......
The heroic Emishi clan said to exist in the far Eastern lands,
sitting astride Akashishi, using arrowheads of stone......

[Ashitaka gives Jiko-Bou a searching look, then looks away.]

Jiko-Bou:

肝心な事は死に食われぬ事だ。
Kanjin na koto wa shi ni kuwarenu koto da.
The essential thing is to not be consumed by death.

イヤ、これは師匠の受け売りだがな。
Iya, kore wa shishou no ukeuri daga na.
Well, that was something I learned from my teacher.

サァ、そなたの米だ。
Saa, sonata no kome da.
Go on, it's your rice.

どんどん食え
Dondon kue
Eat up.

Ashitaka:

Ashitaka:

猪の身体から出て来ました。
Inoshishi no karada kara dete kimashita.
It came from within the boar's body.

巨大な猪に瀕死の傷を与えたものです
Kyodai na inoshishi ni hinshi no kizu o ataeta mono desu
It is what gave the gigantic boar the deadly wound.

Jiko-Bou:

これより更に西へ西へ進むと、
Kore yori sarani nishi e nishi e susumu to,
As you advance further and further west from here,

山の奥の又山奥に、人を寄せつけぬ深い森がある。
yama no oku no mata yamaoku ni, hito o yosetsukenu fukai mori ga aru.
within the mountain recesses, there is a deep forest that bars humans.

シシ神の森だ
Shishi-gami no mori da
It is the forest of the Shishi-gami.

Ashitaka:

シシ神の森......
Shishi-gami no mori......
The forest of the Shishi-gami......

Jiko-Bou:

そこでは獣はみな大きく、太古のままに生きていると聞いた
Soko dewa kemono wa mina ookiku, daiko no mama ni ikite iru to kiita
I've heard that the animals that inhabit the forest are all enormous, and exist as they were in ancient times.


[Early the next morning, Ashitaka leaves for the West, alone again.]

Jiko-Bou:

やはり行くか......
Yahari iku ka......
Just as I expected, he's going......


3. Mountains near Tatara Ba, Western Japan (Izumo?)

[In the rain, Lady Eboshi and her men are transporting food to Tatara Ba.  A long train of cows carrying heavy burdens is slowly proceeding a narrow mountain road above a ravine.]

[男達] (Otoko-tachi) Men:

ホイッ、ホイッ
Hoi, hoi
Go, go!

それっ
Sore
Move!

[エボシ] Eboshi:

みな、あとわずかだ。
Mina, ato wazuka da.
Everyone, it's only a little further.

油断すまいぞ
Yudan sumai zo
Don't let your guard down!

[ワラット] (Waratto) Watchman (?):

でたぞォ。
Deta zoo.
Here they come!

犬神だァ
Inu-gami daa
It's the Wolf Gods!

[Two large wolves (Yama-inu, or "Mountain Dogs") attack the train.   A masked human is riding one of the wolves.]

Eboshi:

牛を落ちつかせろ。
Ushi o ochitsukasero.
Calm down the cattle.

焦らずに陣を組め
Aserazu ni jin o kume
Keep cool, put the formations together.

[ゴンザ] Gonza:

せいて火薬をぬらすな
Seite kayaku o nurasu na
Don't let the gun powder get wet by being in a hurry.

充分に引きよせよ
Juubun ni hikiyose yo!
Draw them in close!

Eboshi:

一番、放てっ
Ichiban, hanate
Number one, fire!

[Ashitaka, riding Yakkuru through the forest near the ravine, hears sounds like thunder coming from the mountain.

Meanwhile, on the mountain path, the wolves come around for another attack.]

Eboshi:

二番、放てェ
Niban, hanate
Number two, fire!

[The wolves retreat.]

Gonza:

化け物め、口ほどにもない
Bakemono me, kuchi hodo nimo nai
Damned monsters, their bark is worse than their bite.

Eboshi:

あれは子供だ。
Are wa kodomo da.
Those are just the pups.

母親がなぜ来ない......
Haha-oya ga naze konai......
Why does the mother not come......

[A huge wolf with a forked tail attacks.  Several cattle and men fall into the ravine.]

Eboshi:

モロだ!!
Moro da!!
It's Moro!!

モロ、来い!!
Moro, koi!!
Come, Moro!!

[Eboshi shoots Moro with an Ishibiya ("stone fire arrow," or hand cannon of Chinese origin).  Moro falls into the ravine.]

Gonza:

やりました!!
Yarimashita!!
We killed her!!

Eboshi:

きやつは不死身だ。
Kiyatsu wa fujimi da.
She is immortal.

この位では死なん
Kono kurai dewa shinan
She won't die from something like this.

Gonza:

【こちらも】だいぶ、やられましたな
[Kochira mo] daibu, yararemashita na
We also took a pretty bad beating.

Eboshi:

すぐ出発しよう
Sugu shuppatsu shiyou
We leave immediately.

Gonza:

谷に落ちた者はいかがします?
Tani ni ochita mono wa ikaga shimasu?
What shall we do about those that fell into the ravine?

Eboshi:

隊列を組み直せ!!
Tairetsu o kuminaose!!
Re-form the ranks!!


4. A River near the Forest of the Shishi-gami

[Ashitaka is crossing a river in the bottom of the ravine when he finds two wounded men.]

Ashitaka:

息がある!!
Iki ga aru!!
He's breathing!!

しっかりしろ!!
Shikkari shiro!!
Hold on!!

[Yakkuru and Ashitaka sense that someone else is nearby.  Peering through the woods, he spots a huge white wolf and a girl on the other side of the river.  The girl is attending to the wolf's wound by sucking out the blood.  Ashitaka shouts across the river to them.]

Ashitaka:

わが名はアシタカ。
Waga na wa Ashitaka.
My name is Ashitaka.

東の果てよりこの地へ来た。
Higashi no hate yori kono chi e kita.
I came here from the faraway lands to the east.

そなた達はシシ神の森に住むときく古い神か!?
Sonata-tachi wa Shishi-gami no mori ni sumu to kiku furui kami ka!?
Are you the old gods I have heard inhabit the forest of the Shishi-gami?!

[The girl gives him back only a cold stare, and disappears into the forest with the wolves.]

[サン] San:

[looking at Ashitaka]

去れ!!
Sare!!
Leave!!


5. In the Forest of the Shishi-gami

[One of the two wounded men screams.  Ashitaka hurries back to find him staring in fright at a small, white-green, semi-transparent being that is sitting nearby.]

Ashitaka:

コダマ......?  ここにもコダマがいるのか
Kodama......?  Koko ni mo Kodama ga iru no ka
Kodama......?  There are Kodama here, too?

静かに。  動くと傷にさわるぞ
Shizuka ni.  Ugoku to kizu ni sawaru zo
Quiet.  If you move you'll worsen your wounds!

好きにさせておけば悪さはしない。
Suki ni sasete okeba warusa wa shinai.
If you let it do as it likes, no harm will come to you.

森が豊かな印しだ
Mori ga yutaka na shirushi da
It's a sign that the forest is plentiful.

[甲六] Kouroku:

こいつらはシシ神を呼ぶんだ
Koitsura wa Shishi-gami o yobu n da
These things call the Shishi-gami.

Ashitaka:

シシ神?  大きな山犬か
Shishi-gami?  Ookina yama-inu ka
Shishi-gami?  A large mountain dog?

Kouroku:

違う。  もっとおっかねぇ、化け物の親玉だ
Chigau.  Motto okkanee, bakemono no oyadama da
No.  Something even more frightening, the chief of the monsters!

アアッ、消えた
Aa, kieta
Aa, it vanished!

Ashitaka:

ヤックルが平気でいる。
Yakkuru ga heiki de iru.
Yakkuru is unconcerned.

危険なものは近くにはいない
Kiken na mono wa chikaku ni wa inai
There is no danger nearby.

[To a Kodama ("tree spirit") sitting on Yakkuru's back]

すまぬが、そなた達の森を通らせてもらうぞ
Sumanu ga, sonata-tachi no mori o toorasete morau zo
I'm sorry, but with your permission we will pass through your forest.

[Yakkuru carries Kouroku, while Ashitaka carries the other man on his back.]

Kouroku:

......おねげぇです、戻りましょうよ。
...... Onegee desu, modorimashou yo.
...... I beg of you, let's go back!

向こう岸なら道がありやす。
Mukou-gishi nara michi ga ariyasu.
There's a path on the other side of the river.

この森を抜けるなんて無茶だ
Kono mori o nukeru nante mucha da
It's impossible to escape this forest!

Ashitaka:

流れが強すぎて渡れない。
Nagare ga tsuyo sugite watarenai.
The river's current is too strong for us to cross.

それにこのケガ人は早くしないと手遅れになるぞ
Soreni kono kega-nin wa hayaku shinai to te-okure ni naru zo
Besides, if we don't hurry, it will be too late for this wounded man.

[As they walk through the forest, many Kodama appear in front of them.]

Ashitaka:

フ。  道案内をしてくれてるのか、
Fu.  Michi-annai o shite kureteru no ka,
Huh.  Are you guiding us?

迷い込ませる気なのか......
mayoikomaseru ki na no ka......
Or trying to make us lose our way?......

Kouroku:

だんなー、こいつらワシらを帰さねぇ気なんですよ
Danna, koitsura washira o kaesanee ki na n desu yo
Sir, these things don't want us to return home!

どんどん増えてやすぜ
Dondon fuete yasu ze
More and more keep appearing.

Ashitaka:

[to the Kodama]

【これが】お前達の母親か。
[Kore ga] omae-tachi no haha-oya ka.
So that's your mother?

立派な樹だ
Rippa na ki da
What a splendid tree!

[They come to a pond in the middle of the forest.]

Ashitaka:

あの少女と山犬の足跡だ。
Ano shoujo to yama-inu no ashi-ato da.
That girl's footprints, and the mountain dogs' as well.

ここは彼等の縄張りか......
Koko wa karera no nawabari ka......
Can this be their domain?......

Kouroku:

ダンナ 今度こそやばいですよ。
Danna kondo koso yabai desu yo
Sir, now for sure it's dangerous!

ここはあの世の入り口だ
Koko wa ano yo no iriguchi da
The entrance to the other world is here.

Ashitaka:

そうだな。  ちょっと休もう
Sou da na.  Chotto yasumou
It looks like it, doesn't it?  Let's rest a while.

[Ashitaka puts down the wounded man he was carrying, and goes to get some water from the pond.  He sees a number of butterflies hovering over some marks in the grass.]

Ashitaka:

足跡......?
Ashi-ato......?
A footprint......?

ひずめが三つ......。
Hizume ga mittsu......
Three hoof marks......

まだ新しい
Mada atarashii
Still fresh...

[On the other side of the pond, Ashitaka sees a herd of deer.  At the moment he sees a strange beast which looks like a buck with many antlers, his right arm starts shaking violently, causing him great pain.]

Kouroku:

だ、ダンナ、どうした んで!?
Da, danna, doshita n de!?
S-sir, what's the matter?!

[As the mysterious beast disappears into the forest, Ashitaka's pain recedes.]

Kouroku:

ダンナ、大丈夫ですかい?
Danna, daijoubu desu kai?
Sir, are you all right?

顔色が真っ青ですぜ
Kaoiro ga massao desu ze
Your face is as white as a sheet!

だからヤバイって
Dakara yabaitte
That's why I told you it's dangerous.

Ashitaka:

お前、何か見たか?
Omae, nanika mita ka?
Did you see anything?

Kouroku:

エッ......?
E......?
Huh......?

Ashitaka:

イヤ、イイ......
Iya, ii......
No, never mind......

[Ashitaka gives some water to the other wounded man (Yashichi?).]

Ashitaka:

もうちっとの辛抱だ。  しっかりしろ
Mou chotto no shimbou da.  Shikkari shiro
Only a little more to endure.  Hang in there.

[ヤ七] Yashichi (?):

......スマネェ......
......sumanee......
......thanks......

Ashitaka:

[to himself, looking towards the spot where the mysterious beast appeared]

......行ってしまった
...... Itte shimatta
(...... He's gone.)


[They resume their journey through the forest.]

Ashitaka:

何故だ......  あれから急に体が軽くなった
Naze da......  are kara kyou ni karada ga karuku natta
(How is it......  Since leaving that place, suddenly [this man's] body became lighter.)

Kouroku:

[tries his broken arm]

アレッ?  痛くねぇ
Are?  Itakunee
Huh?  It doesn't hurt!

なおったァ!!
Naottaa!!
It's healed!!

イテテテ、やっぱり折れてる
Itetete, yappari oreteru
Ouch ouch ouch, like I thought, it's broken...

*1. The Emishi were "barbarians" who lived in the northeast region of Honshuu (the main island of Japan).  Ashitaka is a descendant of the Emishi royal family.  The Emishi kept their independence from the Yamato regime (the Japanese Emperor's government) for a long time, but were finally defeated by the first Shogun at the end of the 8th century. Their culture did not survive, and very little is known about them today.

By the Muromachi era, when Mononoke Hime takes place, the Emishi had long been assimilated into Japanese society.  Miyazaki used his creative freedom and made a clan of Emishi survive in a village in the Northern land, where they hide from the Yamato regime.

*2. The story takes place in the Muromachi Era (1392-1573, or 1333-1467, depending on the scholar), around the time of the War of Onin (1467-1477).   Miyazaki chose this era since the relationship between the Japanese and nature changed greatly around that time.  During the Muromachi Era, iron production jumped, which required great numbers of trees to be cut down (for charcoal), and people came to feel that they could control nature.  Also, it was the time before Japan as we know it was formed.  It was a confusing, yet lively era.  Women had more freedom, and a lot of new arts were born.  The rigid class structure of Samurais, farmers, and artisans was yet to be established.  Miyazaki sees similarities between the Muromachi era and the current era, which is going through various changes and confusion.

*3. Yakkuru is the name of the animal which Ashitaka rides.  Yakkuru is a fictional animal created by Miyazaki, based on a yak.  Its species is called Akashishi ("red deer").  A similar animal appears in Miyazaki's manga, Shuna's Journey.   Yakkuru's name apparently will be spelled "Yakkul" in the English version of the movie; some older sources use the English spelling "Yakkle."

*5. In Japan, cutting one's hair meant that the person is dead (or doesn't belong to this world any more).  For the villagers, Ashitaka is a dead person.  He no longer belongs to the community.  [Ashitaka understands that even should he survive his journey, he can never return; the village must select a new leader, and Ashitaka's presence could lead to conflict.  Also, by returning to the hidden Emishi village from the outside world, he could inadvertently reveal its location to the Yamato regime.]

*6.  For the girls of Ashitaka's village, the knife (called gyoku no kogatana) is a symbol of one's eternal love.  Kaya calls Ashitaka Ani-sama (older brother), but according to Miyazaki, this is an honorific for an older male in the village.  She is not his blood sister.

*7.  The soldiers mistake Ashitaka's hood for a helmet.  Usually, only high-ranking soldiers or samurai could wear helmets and ride horses, so the soldiers believe Ashitaka to be of high rank.  It was considered an honor for an ordinary or rank-and-file soldier (zouhyou) if he could cut off the head of a high-ranking soldier.  Thus, these soldiers are eager to obtain Ashitaka's head as a prize of war.
