The Experimental Tank Unit at Kummersdorf

Before and during World War II, the Wehrmacht Heer (German army) had a research facility at Kummersdorf, a small village southeast of Trebbin, which is a town south of Berlin in Brandenburg province.  The experimental tank unit Panzer-Abteilung Kummersdorf, part of the Panzer-Division Müncheberg, was assigned to this facility.

In 1927, rocket scientist Wernher von Braun (then a student) founded a small research facility next to the Wehrmacht center at Kummersdorf, as part of his Verein für Raumschiffahrt ("Society for Spaceflight").  In 1936, von Braun's rocket research was moved to a new and much larger facility at Peenemünde, on the seacoast in East Prussia.
