[Panel 2]

Carius sticks his head out from the commander's cupola to listen to the Russian verbal barrage, while a grinning crew member emerges from a turret hatch.  Another crew member empties a shell casing over the side of the tank (and it is NOT gunpowder!!).

スピーカーも 復活した。
Supiikaa mo fukkatsu shita.
  The loudspeaker also revived.

  "Carius, the stupid.

The remains of destroyed Russian tanks litter the battlefield.

Carius and another Tiger tank lumber along the Rollbahn.  The crew finally get a chance to ride on the outside of the tank.

３月末ようやく ジラーメへ もどった。
3-gatsu sue youyaku Jiraame e modotta.
  At the end of March, he finally returned to Sillamäe.

すべての虎が ガタガタで オーバーホールが 必要だったからだ。
Subete no tora ga gatagata de oubaahooru ga hitsuyou datta kara da.
  Because all of the Tigers were rattling, and overhauls were essential.

Higashi no fukuro de no, Kariusu-shoutai no katsuyaku wa, kiyuuna senrei de aru.
  The activity of Carius's platoon at the "East Sack" is a rare example of fighting.

Miyazaki and a companion (his interpreter?) now walk through what was once the scene of battle.  The Kinderheim is visible in the distance.  All is now covered in tall grasses and wild flowers.  Billowing white cumulus clouds have replaced the dark clouds of war from so long ago.

エストニアへ 行った。
Esutonia e itta.
  I went to Estonia.

  "It's beautiful..."

Trees and a fence surround a small wooden house that sits alongside a long and narrow dirt road.

  2 houses were rebuilt, but the residents changed to Russians.

In a small cemetery, Miyazaki stands before a row of tombstones adorned with photos and wild flowers, and comments on the inscription from one of the stones.

  There was a cemetery for the Russian war dead.

「１８才の女性兵士だ....」
"18-sai no josei-heishi da...."
  "An 18-year-old female soldier...."

Alongside the railroad tracks, Miyazaki talks to an old woman clutching a basket.  Tears stream down her face.  Miyazaki is surrounded by a swarm of hungry mosquitos.

「昔の美しい村も、そこに 住んでいた人も みんな消えちまったよ」
"Mukashi no utsukushii mura mo, soko ni sunde ita hito mo minna kiechimatta yo"
  "The beautiful village of the olden days and the people who lived there, everything disappeared."

運よく行き会えたエストニア人のバアちゃんは ぼくらの前で 泣いた。
Unyoku ikiaeta Esutonia-jin no baachan wa bokura no mae de naita.
  An old Estonian lady, whom we luckily met, cried in front of us.

ドイツ軍に 強制避難させられた人々は、二度と 帰って来られなかったという。
Doitsu-gun ni kyousei taihi saserareta hitobito wa, nido to kaette korarenakatta to iu.
  People who were forced to evacuate by the German army could never come back again.

ドイツと 共に 戦った男達も またシベリア連行されて消息を 絶ったのだ。
Doitsu to tomoni tatakatta otoko-tachi mo mata Shiberia renkou sarete shousoku o tatta no da.
  Men who fought together with the Germans also were taken to Siberia and were never heard from again.

In the foreground, a dirt road leads away from a railroad crossing, and vanishes into the distant woods.

踏切りのむこうの道は 森の中へ 消えようと していた
Fumikiri no mukou no michi wa mori no naka e kieyou to shite ita
  The road on the other side of the railroad crossing was going to disappear into the woods.

ぼくは すこしホッとしたのだった
