The Russian position at Ruin 2 is viewed in cut-away.  A veritable ant's nest of connecting tunnels and bunkers have been constructed beneath the Ruin.  Miyazaki shows his face in the upper left hand corner.

  If given time, the Russian soldiers hide deep underground.

The text below is written on a muddied and worn scroll which covers the top half of the panel.  Two German infantrymen lie in wait in their foxhole.

  Even so, the infantrymen didn't give up.

その粘り強さに カリウスは 感嘆した。
Sono nebarizuyosa ni Kariusu wa kantan shita.
  Carius admired this tenacity.

もっとも歩兵達も 戦車兵の粘り強さに 感嘆していたのだ。
Mottomo hohei-tachi mo sensha-hei no nebarizuyosa ni kantan shite ita no da.
  Of course, the infantrymen also admired the tenacity of the tank soldiers.

An aerial view of the German assault on Ruin 2 from their positions surrounding Ruin 1.  Kerscher is on the far left flank; Carius is in the center to the left of Ruin 1; and either Gruber or Zwetti is positioned to the right of Ruin 1.  All three Tigers fire on Ruin 2 [Top of Panel], which is now totally engulfed in flame and smoke.  Intense German small arms fire also emanates from Ruin 1, while the counterattacking German forces sweep between Kerscher and Carius on their way to Ruin 2.  (Whew, what a scene!!)

  Bombardment from three sides.

逃げ道にと 故意に 後を あけた。
Nige-michi ni to koi ni ushiro o aketa.
  They intentionally opened the back as an escape route.

  After a fierce battle (lasting) 1 and a half hours, Ruin 2 returned to the German side.

損害の大きさに ロシア軍も ついに たじろいだ。
Songai no ookisa ni Roshia-gun mo tsuini tajiroi da.
  The Russian army finally shrinks back due to the size of their losses.
