A destroyed Russian PAK lies in the foreground. German soldiers carry the dead and wounded toward Carius's tank, already covered with injured soldiers. Explosions in the distance light up the sky and bathe the battlefield in a garish glow.

A tarp containing the lifeless body of the second lieutenant is slung between three German infantrymen as they approach a waiting supply truck. Miyazaki has chosen not to color the soldiers and truck. All is white save for the slate blue sky.
