Miyazaki, in pig form, laments his inability to complete the tale of Otto Carius.

[Note: Rather than his real personal name Hayao ("agile"), in Episodes 5 and 6 Miyazaki signs himself with the self-mocking name Guzuo, which may derive from the noun guzu ("laggard, dawdler") or the adjective guzuguzu ("slowly, tardily, hesitantingly").  To add to the self-deprecation, behind Guzuo and in smaller letters he writes Noroo, which derives from the adjective noroi ("slow, stupid").]

A large group of German soldiers peer up at a loudspeaker mounted on the side of a wooden building.

The communications of Carius's platoon during the battle were being broadcast by loudspeaker.

If the Russian army breaks through, this place also will be in danger immediately.

Those same German soldiers now fall silent, as Carius's apparent victory seems short-lived.

"The Russian army is preparing to attack again.  They're also concentrating their tanks.  Our infantrymen haven't come yet.  Our artillerymen have been quiet, as I expected.  Need reinforcements.  (noises) "

[Panel 5]

Two Tiger tanks and their crews stand at the ready, but look puzzled.

それなのに 中隊本部の反応は まったく にぶかった。
Sorena noni chuutai-honbu no hannou wa mattaku nibukatta.
Even so, the reaction of company headquarters was totally slow.

「拠点を 確保セヨ」と 返電して 来ただけ だったのだ。

They only replied, "Secure our position."

[Panel 6]

A smartly dressed von Schiller looks off in the distance.  A most serious pose indeed.

Although he is a common type (of person) at any company office, or government office, or in the military, this kind of man is fussy about rules and dress codes, but doesn't notice at all his own cowardliness, incompetence, and irresponsibility.

[Panel 7]

The top half of the panel has von Schiller sitting at a table in front of a large bookshelf dressed in civilian garb.  The lower half depicts a disgusted Miyazaka sitting with his arms and legs crossed, puffing on a cigarette.

Miyazaki sits at a table; phone to his left ear and pencil in hand.  Cigarette butts and discarded food lie about.  (What a mess!!)

「エッ  ジラーメが 地図に 出てないって?」
"E            Jiraame ga chizu ni dete naitte?"
"What?  Silamäe isn't on the map?"

「それ 中学校の地図 じゃない?」
"Sore chuugakkou no chizu ja nai?"
  "Is that a middle-school map?"

[Note:  Japanese junior-high-school students receive a map for geography class, but usually it is not very detailed.]

[Panel 10]

A map is illustrated detailing the current position(s) of the German and Russian forces around Silamäe and the greater Narva Sector.  Superimposed on the right-hand side of the panel are two smaller maps (see Panels 11 & 12 below).  On the left-hand side of the panel, half way down, Miyazaki talks to a student.  At the lower left corner of the panel, Carius and a Russian general stand side-by-side.

Either Silamäe, or Carius's sector: Lembitu village, are the most rural of rural districts; and even if you check a German military map, Silamäe appropriately is called a "lonely village."

To make matters worse, I don't know which is the right name - Silamäe, Sillamäe, or Silame - depending on the way of reading and the translators, and getting complicated with German, Russian, and Estonian languages.

「ギョヘテとは  俺のことかと、ゲーテいい...」
"Gyohete to wa  Ore no koto ka to, Geete ii..."
"'You said Gyohete?  That certainly is my name,' Herr von Goethe says...."

[Note:  Miyazaki uses the haiku rhythm here, which usually consists of 5-7-5 characters (syllables):
"Gyohete to wa" is 5 characters, "ore no koto ka to" is 7 characters, and "Geete ii" is 5 characters.]

「ゲーテって なんですか」
