Through the forward observation slit in the commander's cupola, Carius spies a Russian tank in the distance.

From outside the tank, only Carius's eyes are visible through the observation slit. Miyazaki laments the limitations of drawing comics.

A scroll separates Miyazaki (as a pig) holding a paper tube to his eyes to the right, and a model Russian tank illustrated to the left. Miyazaki uses this setup to determine the appearance that the real Russian KV tank would have had in Carius's field of view through his observation slit.

Doitsu-hei wa kouzoku no sensha o tori-nigasu no o
osoreta kara da.
Because the Russian soldiers were afraid to block their only attack
path, and the German soldiers were afraid to miss (any) following tanks.
A view straight down the barrel of the 88mm cannon of Carius's Tiger tank, as he communicates by radio with Kerscher from within the tank.

The Russian tank struck by Carius's initial salvo (still in the distance) explodes into a ball of fire and a plume of black smoke.

In the foreground, Russian soldiers frantically try to escape their burning tank. A tank to the left takes a direct hit, while an undamaged tank in the background moves off at great speed.
