A Russian soldier intently inspects a map as a fly circles over his head.  A larger version of the map (laid out in grids, with Carius's zig-zag movements penciled in) is illustrated behind the soldier.

Through the periscope of Carius's tank we see the ruins of a farmhouse, with only its earthen chimney visible.

  "We'll graze the farmhouse (Ruin 1).  Pay attention to the [?]-soldiers!!"

Heavily armed Russian troops, hiding amongst the ruins of the farmhouse, await the approach of Carius.

Carius passes by the concealed Russian troops (pictured in the foreground).  They immediately attack with machine guns and grenades.  One grenade explodes to the rear of Carius's tank.

  "Swatting the flies" led into the preparatory bombardment for the second offensive.

  Right before noon, the whole sector was covered by the barrage.

Carius and his Tiger depart the area heading into a wall of smoke, a result of the bombardment.

  Under gunfire, Carius retraced his path to the rear of Ruin 1.

Carius and Kerscher, surrounded by fire and smoke, sit and wait.

そこに いすわる。 踏切りまで３００ｍ  絶好の射点。
Soko ni isuwaru.         Fumikiri made 300m       Zekkou no shaten.
  He stayed there.  300 meters to the railway crossing.  The best shooting point.

砲撃のおかげで 歩兵の心配は ない。
Hougeki no okage de hohei no shimpai wa nai.
  Thanks to the bombardment, he didn't need to worry about the infantrymen.

In the commander's cupola of his tank, Carius assesses the situation over the radio to Kerscher, then instructs his own radio man.

「ケルシャー  弾着が 移動したら お客さんが 来るぞ」
"Kerushaa          Danchaku ga idou shitara okyaku-san ga kuru zo"
  "Kerscher - when the impacts (of the barrage) move, our guests will come."
