[Panel 1]

Carius peers intently through an observation slit in the commander's cupola.

「10時方向T―34 5輌  距離700  尻の方から やろう」
"10-ji houkou T-34 5-ryou            Kyori 700        Shiri no hou kara yarou"
  "At the direction of 10 o'clock, 5 T-34s.  Distance 700.  Let's attack from their rear."

おどろいている ヒマは ない
Odoroite iru hima wa nai

[Panel 2]

A bright muzzle flash from Carius's Tiger indicates his intentions.

「テェ」
"Tee"
  "Shoot."

[Panel 3]

Hapless Russian soldiers scramble off of two T-34 tanks as they take direct hits.  Two additional T-34s are visible in the background, fleeing the scene.

700mでは はずしっこない。
700m dewa hazu shikkonai.
  (Carius) won't miss at 700 meters.

おまけに、彼等は こちらの位置を つかんでいなかった。
Omakeni, karera wa kochira no ichi o tsukande inakatta.
  Besides, they (the Russians) didn't know his position.

[Panel 4]

Russian soldiers run in all directions as a T-34 is engulfed in smoke and flames.

歩兵が ひきはじめた。
Hohei ga hiki hajimeta.
  The Russian infantrymen started withdrawing.

「虎だァ!!」
"Tora daa!!"
  "Tigers!!"


[Panel 5]

Carius swings the turret hatch cover open and pops his head out for a clearer view of the battlefield.  Russian troops and the burning T-34 tanks are barely visible in the distance.

五輌とも 片づけた。が、歩兵に かまうヒマも 弾丸もない。
Go-ryou tomo katazuketa.  Ga, hohei ni kamau hima mo dangan mo nai.
  (The Tigers) finished up all 5 tanks, but there was neither spare time nor (enough) shells to deal with the infantrymen.

退却中の歩兵
Taikyo-chuu no hohei
  The infantrymen withdrawing  [arrow to horizon]

「廃虚に 近づくぞ    穴に 気を つけろ」
"Haikyo ni chikazuku zo  Ana ni ki o tsukeru"
  "Let's get close to the ruins.  Be careful of holes."

SFX:

Chira           kuri
  (glancing)    (moving the tank hatch)

「カリウスへ  お兄さんが 援護する」
"Kariusu e           Onii-san ga engo suru"
  "To Carius - your brother will back you up."

「了解   踏切りを たのむ」
"Ryoukai   Fumikiri o tanomu"
  "Roger.  Go to the railway crossing."


[Panel 6]

A panoramic view of the terrain reveals the remains of two farmhouses.  Only the earthen fireplaces hint at what stood there before.

廃虚には、三つとも ロシア兵が もぐりこんでいた。
Haikyo ni wa, mittsu tomo Roshia-hei ga moguri konde ita.
  The Russian soldiers were hiding in all three ruins.

こうなると 戦車だけでは ムリだ。
Kou naru to sensha dake dewa muri da.
  This situation is impossible for tanks alone.

「中隊 本部と 連絡が とれました!!」

[Panel 7]

Only the turrets of Carius's and Kerscher's Tigers are visible as they take small arms fire.

「こちらカリウス  第一波は 撃退した。
"Kochira Kariusu       Dai-ippa wa gekitai shita.
  "This is Carius.  We repulsed the first wave.

当戦区には 味方の歩兵は 一名も いない。」
Tousenku ni wa mikata no houhei wa ichimei mo inai."
  There are no allied infantrymen in this sector."

Chi-n       chi-n        chi-n        pishi
  (sound of shells hitting the tank)

「廃虚は 三つとも うばわれた。
"Haikyo wa mittsu tomo ubawareta.
  "All three ruins were taken over.

至急 歩兵を 送ってくれ!  増援こう!!」
Shikyuu hohei o okutte kure!  Zouen kou!!"
  Send infantrymen immediately!  We want reinforcements!!"


[Panel 8]

Carius and Kerscher, viewed leaving the scene, barely escape a huge explosion from a Russian artillery shell.

SFX:

  (sound of explosion)

[Panel 9]

Carius's Tiger is about to become covered with mud falling from the sky, the result of a near miss from their own army's artillery.

「味方の210ミリだ!!  やられるぞ」
"Mikata no 210-miri da!!  Yarareru zo"
  "It's friendly fire, 210-millimeter (shells)!!  We'll be damaged."

SFX:

Zaza
  (sound of mud falling onto the tanks)

SFX:

「本部!  本部!」
"Honbu!  Honbu!"
  "Headquarters!  Headquarters!"


[Panel 10]

Russian soldiers hurriedly move logs into position as they build their makeshift bridges to cover the soft peat lands.

ロシア軍は、すぐ第2次 攻撃の準備に とりかかっていた。
Roshia-gun wa, sugu dainiji-kougeki no junbi ni torikakatte ita.
  Immediately, the Russian army was beginning to prepare for a second attack.

「いそげェ」
"Isogee"
  "Hurry!"

[Panel 11]

A column of six Russian T-34 tanks accompanied by a large contingent of infantry approach.  Miyazaki, pictured below the panel, laments over the situation he has created for himself.

攻撃の主力は 出おくれた6輌
Kougeki no shuryoku wa deokureta 6-ryou
  The main attacking force were 6 tanks which were late.

「先頭に されちゃった」
"Sentou ni sarechatta"
  "We're in the lead."

SFX:
