A Russian infantry and T-34 tank column cross the peat lands on a make-shift bridge constructed of logs.

「 サッサッと すすめ!!  ドイツ軍に 立ちなおる 時間を やる気か!!」
"Sassa to susume!!  Doitsu-gun ni tachinaoru jikan o yaru ki ka!!"
  "Move on quickly!!  Do you want to give the German soldiers time to recover?!"

[Panel 2]

The bridge gives way under the weight of a Russian T-34 tank.  Another T-34 (carrying infantry) attempts to pass the sinking tank on the narrow bridge.

軟弱な 攻撃路に 先頭 戦車が 脚を とられたのだ。
Nanjakuna kougeki-ro ni sentou-sensha ga ashi o torareta no da.
  The (Russians') lead tank was stuck in the weak attack route (due to the peat).

[Panel 3]

An overhead view of the battlefield shows the zig-zag path of the Russian advance, through the peat lands towards Carius's position beyond the railroad embankment.

  The battlefield viewed from the Russian side

石も土もない 泥炭地で、道を 補強するのは 容易ではない。
Ishi mo tsuchi mo nai deitanchi de, michi o hokyou suru no wa youi dewa nai.
  As the peat land has neither stone nor soil, it is not easy to reinforce the roadway.

以降この道は、ロシア軍の時間を うばいつづける。
Ikou kono michi wa, roshia-gun no jikan o ubai tsuzukeru.
  Afterward, this roadway continues to take time from the Russian army (advance).

[Panel 4]

A Russian tank commander shouts out orders to his troops.

「そのジャマものを ひきずり出セェ!
"Sono jama mono o hikizuridasee!
  "Pull out that obstruction (the tank)!

通れた奴は 突進しろっ
Tooreta yatsu wa tosshin shiro
  Anyone who gets through, make a charge.

踏切りを こえろ!
Fumikiri o koero!
  Cross over the railway crossing!

歩兵は かまわず 攻撃に 移れ
Hohei wa kamawazu kougeki ni utsure
  Infantrymen, don't mind us, move to attack.

いそげ!! シベリアへ 送っちゃうぞ」
Isoge!!  Shiberia e okutchau zo"
  Hurry!!  Or I'll send you to Siberia."

[Panel 5]

The lead Russian T-34 (loaded with infantry) clears the railroad crossing with Carius's position in sight.

ついに 最初の戦車が 踏切りを こえた
Tsuini saisho no sensha ga fumikiri o koeta
  At last, the first tank crossed over the railway crossing.

  (sound of the tank advancing)

この同じ時、カリウスは 逃げる ドイツ兵を 発見していた。

  At the same time, Carius discovered the German soldiers running away.

[Panel 6]

Russian infantry spread out as they approach the German position.

歩兵も 線路を こえて前進。
Hohei mo senro o koete zenshin.
  The (Russian) infantrymen also crossed over the railway crossing and advanced.

ドイツ兵の姿は ない。
Doitsu-hei no sugata wa nai.
  There are no German soldiers here.

SFX:
トボトボ  トボトボ  ゾロゾロ
Tobotobo      tobotobo     zorozoro
  (trudging)                       (trooping)

隊列は 組まない。まとめてやられちまう からだ が、
Tairetsu wa kumanai.  Matomete yararechimau kara da ga,
ちらばるので なおさら トボトボ 見える。
chirabaru node naosara tobotobo mieru.
  They don't form a single file, because they will be vulnerable; but since they scatter, they look like they are trudging along.  [text underneath Panel 6]


[Panel 7]

T-34s still on the bridge frantically drive around the stranded tank [see Panel 2] towards the railroad crossing.  Soldiers vainly attempt to free the tank.

出おくれた戦車は 必死に 時間を とりもどそうと する。
Deokureta sensha wa hisshini jikan o torimodosou to suru.
  The tanks that were late tried desperately to recover lost time.

「はやくう!!」
"Hayakuu!!"
  "Hurry!!"

[Panel 8]

A lone Russian tank sinks deeper into the peat lands.

悪いことに 十二輌の内 一輌は KV だった。
Warui koto ni juuni-ryou no uchi ichi-ryou wa KV datta.
  To make things worse, one of the 12 tanks was a KV.  [KV = heavy early-model Russian tank]

ズッシリ
Zusshiri
  (heavy)

「誰だよ   こんなの持ちこんだのは」
"Dare da yo   Konna no mochikonda no wa"
  "Who's the one who brought this?"


[Panel 9]

Major Haase shouts into a field radio as debris falls from the ceiling, a result of Russian artillery.

混乱は ドイツ軍の方が もっとひどかった。
Konran wa Doitsu-gun no hou ga motto hidokatta.
  As for disorder, the German army was much worse.

SFX:
ビリビリ  ズズーン
Biribiri         zuzu-n
  (shaking)    (shooting)

ハーゼは この時もまだ 突出部を 心配していたのだ。
Haaze wa kono toki mo mada tosshutsu-bu o shimpai shite ita no da.
  Haase was still worried about the protrusion point at this time.

「クソッ  通ぜん」
"Kuso          Tsuuzen"
  "Shit, no use."

キンダーハイムの連隊 本部
Kindaahaimu no rentai-honbu
  The regimental headquarters at the Kinderheim  [text to left of Panel 9]


[Panel 10]

Carius, his head barely visible above the commander's cupola, heads into action.

おそらく 両軍の中で、もっとも 冷静だったのが 二十一才のこの若者だった。
Osoraku ryougun no naka de, mottomo reisei datta no ga nijuu-issai no kono wakamono datta.
  Perhaps the calmest person within both armies was this young man, 21 years old.

SFX:
ゴゴゴ
Gogogo
  (sound of the tank)

「12時に 歩兵の群と T―34が いる
"12-ji ni hohei no mure to T-34 ga iru
  "At 12 o'clock, there are a group of infantrymen and T-34s.  [T-34 = newer-model Russian tank]

アッ  やっぱり  PAKだ」
A          Yappari       PAK da"
  Oh.  Just as I thought.  It's the PAKs."
