Russian bombers lay down a withering bombardment along the German lines.
ロシア軍の準備 砲撃で 貧乏な６１師団の戦線は ズタボロに なってしまった。
Roshia-gun no junbi-hougeki de bimbouna 61-shidan no sensen wa zutaboro ni natte shimatta.
The weakened 61st Division's front line had become torn into shreds by the Russian army's preparatory bombardment.
ロシアの攻撃機が そこら中に 爆撃を ばらまいていく。
Roshia no kougeki-ki ga sokora juu ni bakugeki o baramaite iku.
The Russians' attack planes scattered bombs everywhere.

Carius's two Tigers sit idle in a field as heavy smoke fills the air.
カリウス 小隊の二輌の虎は まだ動かない。
Kariusu shotai no ni-ryou no tora wa mada ugokanai.
The two Tigers of Carius's platoon still didn't move.
状況が 判らぬまま とび出すのは 自殺に 等しいのだ。
Joukyou ga wakaranu mama tobidasu no wa jisatsuni hitoshii no da.
To rush out without understanding the situation is equivalent to committing suicide.
「バアちゃん バアちゃん ケーキが こげてるヨ」
"Baachan baachan keeki ga kogeteru yo"
"Grandma, Grandma, the cake is burning."

Carius sizes up the situation from within the confines of his tank through one of the observation slits in the commander's cupola.
暖機が おわったのに 無線は まったく通じない。
Denki ga owatta noni musen wa mattaku tsuujinai.
Although the machines are warmed up, the radio can't be used at all.
もうロシア軍は 戦線を 突破したの かもしれない。
Mou Roshia-gun wa sensen o toppashita no kamo shirenai.
The Russian army may have already broken through the front line.

Unarmed German infantry frantically run past Carius's position fleeing the Russian onslaught.
「わが軍の兵隊だ まる腰だ」
"Waga gun no heitai da Maru goshi da"
"They're our army's soldiers. They're unarmed."
Carius, narrowly avoiding an impacting shell, runs towards two of the retreating German infantrymen.
「オーイ まてーっ どこの隊だ！？」
"O-i
mate-
Doko no tai da!?"
"Hey. Wait. Which company are you in?!"
More Russian artillery shells find their mark as Carius interrogates the German soldiers.
「君達は 拠点の兵隊じゃないのか！？」
"Kimi-tachi wa kyoten no heitai ja nai no ka!?"
"Aren't you soldiers from the base?!"
「陣地は メチャクチャです もうだめだ！！」
"Jinchi wa mechakucha desu
Mou dame da!!"
"The position is messed up. It's already no use!!"
「ロシア兵が 来たのか？」
"Roshia-hei ga kita no ka?"
"Did the Russian soldiers come?"
「判りません でもとても守りきれません」
"Wakarimasen
Demo totemo mamori kiremasen"
"I don't know, but we can't defend it anymore."

Carius quickly climbs back into his Tiger.

THIS IS BAD.
歩兵が パニックって 東の袋の前面は カラッポに なっている。
Hohei ga panikkutte higashi no fukuro no zenmen wa karappo ni natte iru.
The infantrymen panicked and retreated from the front part of the "East Sack."
「前進！！ 持場へ 行くぞ」
"Zenshin!! Mochiba e iku zo"
"Go forward!! Go to our post!"
Carius, his head visible outside the commander's cupola, approaches farmhouses engulfed in flames.
二匹の虎は ようやく 動きはじめた。
Ni-hiki no tora wa youyaku ugoki hajimeta.
The two Tigers finally started moving.
この時 午前一Ｏ時 ちょっと前
Kono toki gozen 10-ji chotto mae
This was just before 10 AM.

Carius calls out a warning to the commander of the Tiger tank bringing up the rear.
「ケルシャー 土手の上を 見はれ」
"Kerushaa dote no ue o mihare"
"Kerscher, watch the top of the bank."
「ＰＡＫが いるはずだ！！」
"PAK ga iru hazu da!!"
"There should be PAKs there!!"

Advancing Russian tanks and infantry work their way through the peat lands.

Sore yori mae, 9-ji 30-pun ni Roshia-gun wa higashi no fukuro no oku kara zenshin o hajimete ita.
Before that, at 9:30, the Russian army started advancing from the interior of the "East Sack."

どの国の映像でも 攻撃に 向う兵士は、トボトボ 歩くのが 印象的だ。
Dono kuni no eizou demo kougeki ni mukau heishi wa, tobotobo aruku no ga inshouteki da.
Even in the images (of war) from any country, it is impressive that soldiers heading into an attack trudge along.
だれだって 死にタクないのだ。
Dare datte shinitakunai no da.
Nobody wants to die.
[Note: Here, it appears that Miyazaki is remarking on an observation he has made from seeing video or movie images of war between various countries.]
An angry Russian commander communicates with the front on a field radio.
第一波は 戦車十二輌と 歩兵一ヶ大隊

The first wave of the (Russian) attack - twelve tanks and one battalion of infantrymen
兵力は もっとあるのだが、攻撃路が 一本しかないので
Hei-ryoku wa motto aru no da ga, kougeki-ro ga ippon shikanai node
これ以上一度に 送り出せなかったのだ。
kore ijou ichido ni okuridasenakatta no da.
They had more soldiers, but because there was only one attack route, they couldn't send out any more at once.
「線路を こえたか？」
