[Panel 1]

Carius personally supervises the re-fueling of his tanks.   Soldiers pump fuel from 50 gallon drums by hand.

For Carius and his men, the Tiger was not a legend---it was real.

They'd lost the forks and so forth long ago.

[Panel 6]

As the stars still shine, the sleeping Tiger tanks are brought to life by their reluctant crews.

[Panel 7]

We see the tank crew (via cut-away) trapped in their tank as shells fall around them.  Miyazaki's editor (last seen on Page 150, Panel 1) comments again on Miyazaki's rendering of the Tiger's caterpillar tracks; Miyazaki (again portraying himself as a pig) gives the same response as before.

Hitasura matsu.  Zutto matsu.  Tonikaku taeru.
Nothing but waiting.  A lot of waiting.  Somehow or other, they endure.

Kimagurena ippatsu de kichouna kuruu o ushinatte wa naranai.
They must not lose a precious crewmember to a capricious single shot.

  Going outside is strictly prohibited.

  Thus, the interior stunk fiercely.

  "Ano saa..."
    "Er..."  [- Tomi]

  "Muri desu."
    "It's impossible."  [- Miyazaki-pig]

[Panel 8]

An oil lamp glows brightly on the floor of the tank.

Anmari samui node, sekiyu ranpu o mochikonda no da.
Because it was so cold, someone brought in an oil lamp.

Koitsu ga sugoi susu o dasu.
  This produced a horrible soot.

Shin no dashi sugi
Turning up the wick too much  [arrow pointing to lamp wick]

[Panel 9]

Carius and one of the crew stamp out lice inside the tank.   The interior walls are now coated with soot from the oil lamp.

Shitsunai ni shiroi tokoro wa dokomo nakunatta.
There were no white surfaces left in the interior.

Soreni shirami ga tairyou-hassei.
Moreover, there was a massive outbreak of lice.

  "Kono kono."
    "This, this..."

SFX:
puchi        puchi
  (sound of lice being crushed)

[Panel 10]

A lone German soldier is seen running away on a different kind of mission.  Miyazaki (again as a pig in the lower right corner) tells us more than we need to know.

Excretion: After it got dark, they went out one by one.

Dantai wa kiken na no da.
Doing it in groups was dangerous.

  "Hayaku-!"
    "Hurry!"

  "Sonna."
    "No way."

  "Kami nashi desu."
    "No paper."  [- Miyazaki-pig]

[Panel 11]

A soldier empties an 88mm shell casing.  The contents are not factory spec.  Miyazaki (ever the humorist in that lower right corner) adds to the knowledge base of a tank soldier's life.

Oshikko wa shanai de sumashita.
Urine:  They did it in an empty shell case.

  "Ike ne, kootchatta."
    "Ah, it froze."

"88 wa takusan hairu no da."
    "The 88 could contain a lot."  [- Miyazaki-pig]

[Panel 12]

As Russian troops push an artillery piece up a steep incline, a Russian officer and soldier admire their efforts from below.

The Russian army didn't give up.

[Panel 13]

Russian troops survey the damage at the railroad bunker.

Demo dote kara sugata o dasu to, sugu tora ga kita.
But when they showed up from the railroad bunker, the Tigers always came out quickly.

  "Koma o tobashite kowasu na!!"
"Don't skip over the coma, or break down!!" [?]

[Panel 14]

German troops are aghast as Carius emerges from his tank in a cloud of lice and soot.

Soitsu wa sekai-ichi kitanai tora datta.
That was the filthiest Tiger in the world.

SFX:

[Panel 15]

A Russian officer makes a vain attempt at taunting our hero by shouting into a microphone as a loudspeaker blares out over the battlefield.
