[Panel 1]

Carius leads his Tiger tanks and ground troops to relative safety alongside a damaged log barn. In the lower right corner of the panel a human and pig discuss the finer points of drawing.

カリウス小隊は 農家Ｉの納屋のカゲに 待機する ことにした。
Kariusu shoutai wa nouka 1 no naya no kage ni taiki suru koto ni shita.
  Carius's platoon decided to wait for orders behind the barn of Farmhouse #1.

「スゲェ、強そう。」
  "Sugee, tsuyosou."
    "Amazing, it looks strong."

東部 戦線に 来たばかりの少年兵たち
Toubu-sensen ni kita bakari no shounen-hei-tachi
  Young soldiers who had just come to the Eastern front [arrow to soldiers speaking the lines above]

　「キャタピラは 正確に。」 ー富
    "Kyatapira wa seikaku ni." - Tomi [?]
        "Draw the caterpillar tracks accurately." - Tomi-something [? - probably Miyazaki's editor]

　「ムリです。」
    "Muri desu."
        "It's impossible." [- a pig (Miyazaki?)]

[Panel 2]

German troops are seen fleeing a barrage of shell fire directed at their position.

エンジン音に スグ ロシア軍が 反応する。
Enjin on ni suge roshia gun ga hannou suru.
  The Russian troops reacted quickly to the sound of the engine.

Carius has closed the turret hatch in response to the Russian shelling.

    "Let's stay up all night the way we are."

[Panel 4]

Carius waits out the night inside the freezing tank.   Miyazaki remarks on Carius' talents as a leader.

「サムー、めしー。」
  "Samuu, meshii."
    "It's cold, food."

感動するのは この若い 戦車長が、すべて 自分の判断で 行動したことである。
Kandou suru no wa kono wakai sensha-chou ga, subete jibun no handan de koudou shita koto de aru.
  The thing that impressed me, was that this young tank commander took action based entirely on his own judgement.

命令どおりなら、もっと手ヌキも 休養も できたのだ。
Meirei doori nara, motto tenuki mo kyuuyou mo dekita no da.
  If he had followed orders, he could have cut corners and taken a rest.

[Panel 5]

A German armored car careens down a snow-covered road with supplies as Russian mortar shells impact close behind.

One of the occupants of the armored car hands a tank crewman a pot of coffee.

「ハイ、おまち。迫撃砲 風味のコーヒーね。」
  "Hai, omachi.  Hakugekihou-fuumi no kouhii ne."
    "Hi, you must have been waiting.  The mortar flavored coffee."

「ホイ。」
  "Hoi."
    "Here you are."

The armored car departs and runs the gauntlet again as more Russian shells attempt to find their mark.

補給班も 勇敢だった。
Hokyuu-han mo yuukan datta.
  The supply team was also brave.

「またくるで。」
  "Mata kuru de."
    "We'll come again."

この後、結局 キケン すぎて、朝めしは ヌキに なった。

  After this, because it became too dangerous after all, there was no breakfast.

A hidden Russian observation post bears the brunt of German artillery fire.

ロシア軍も 勤勉だった。
Roshia gun mo kinben datta.
  The Russian army was hard-working, also.

The Russian artillery home in on their target.  Carius and his tanks are forced to hurriedly abandon their positions as shells impact the barn and surrounding farmyard.

虎は 暖機に１５分 かかるのだ。
Tora wa danki ni 15-fun kakaru no da.
  It takes 15 minutes to warm up a Tiger.

Carius can't quite finish his coffee as explosions rock the tank.  Our friendly narrator, the retired soldier, comments at the bottom of the panel.  (He was last seen on page 149, panel 7)

  "Achichi."
    "Ouch."

ロシア軍のカク 乱射撃が 効果を あげたのだ。
Roshia gun no kaku ransha-geki ga kouka o ageta no da.
  The Russian troops' random shooting obtained the desired results.

An aerial view of the landscape shows the path taken by our hero.  He stops near a crossroads sparsely populated by a few buildings.

７００Ｍほど 西へ 移った。
700M hodo nishi e utsutta.
  They moved about 700 meters to the west.

ここなら、何かあっても スグ かけつけられる。
Koko nara, nanika atte mo sugu kaketsukerareru.
  From here, if something happened, they could rush to the scene.

[Panel 12]

The Germans hole up inside a log farmhouse alongside the road for protection.  A call comes in over the radio.

「フーッ。しずかに なった．．．」
  "Fuu.  Shizuka ni natta..."
    "(sigh).  It became quiet..."

SFX:

  (sigh of relief)

「電話が 来た。」
  "Denwa ga kita."
    "The call came."

Carius discusses strategy with some of his troops.

ロシア兵は まだ少し時間を くれるようだ。
Roshia hei wa mada sukoshi jikan o kureru you da.
  It looks like the Russian army still gives us a little time.

カリウスは 歩兵に 助言し、連絡網を 作りあげた。
Kariusu wa hohei ni jogenshi, renraku-mo o tsukuri ageta.
  Carius advised the infantrymen, and completed the communication network.

昼は 戦車が 責任を 持ち、夜は 歩兵が 責任を 持つ。
Hiru wa sensha ga sekinin o mochi, yoru wa hohei ga senkinin o motsu.
  In the daytime, the tanks take the responsibility of standing guard, and at night, the infantrymen take responsibility.

双方の信頼が ないと、とてもここは 守れない。
Souhou no shinrai ga nai to, totemo koko wa mamorenai.
  If they don't trust each other, they can't possibly protect this location.

「モシモシ。」
  "Moshi moshi."
    "Hello."

[Panel 14]

Two motionless Tiger tanks turn to white as a fresh blanket of snow covers their armor.

SFX:

  (sneezing)

かくて５７ｔの二匹の虎は 雪の中に うずくまった。
Kakute 57t no nihiki no tora wa yuki no naka ni uzukumatta.
  Thus the two 57-ton Tigers squatted in the middle of the snow.

まさか 何週間も そのままいることに なるとは 思わずに．．．
Masaka nanshuukan mo sono mama iru koto ni naru to wa omowazu ni...
  They never imagined they would stay as they were, unintentionally, for several weeks...
