The bullet pierced my chest. I fell into Marius's embrace. Despite the horrid pain, all I could think of is that I was alone with him in his arms at last.

"'Ponine... you're going to live. You have to live. I don't know what I'll do without you if you leave me. Please 'Ponine, you have to live."

Now I know that God has not given up on me. He has granted me my one true wish in the last minutes of my life. My wish to be with Marius is fulfilled... even if my time with him is short, the memory of it will be in my heart forever. I love him and always will.

I can hear him crying. I hate it when he's sad but this time... he's crying over me. Not Cosette, me! I do not know whether to be happy or to despair because he is in pain... as am I.

"Please 'Ponine! Don't leave me! I need you. I need my one true friend. Please 'Ponine! Please... don't leave me!"

Through all the tears of pain and joy at his words, I manage to tell him that I love him and will always love him. He kisses me gently and my soul leaves him.
