Hi All, 10/3/2007

Big campout coming up - 26 boys are signed up! This is going to be a GREAT event. This week's meeting will be mostly devoted to final preparations, a couple of Boards of Review, and probably a game or 2.

Some details for the Jamboree:
First, on the permission slips I put a departure time of 5:30 Friday night. Fact is, the earlier the better. Units can start arriving after 4:00. It would be best for all to arrive before dark if possible (6:00 or so). Therefore a departure time of 3 or 4 would be preferable. We will arrange carpools at the meeting, so it would be great for parents to stick around at the beginning to make sure that we have transportation solidified.

Next, if you bring your gear to the meeting on Thursday, we will load it in the trailer and I will haul it up to Gunstock Friday afternoon. This is the best way to get gear to the campsite, as anything that you bring with you MUST be carried from the parking lot. In other words, be prepared to carry any gear you bring, possibly 1/2 mile or more. I will put a wheelbarrow in the trailer to help with transportation of any gear that arrives after 4:00 (including coolers for food).

Meals: I have been in contact with all patrol leaders. With the exception of one patrol, meal plans have been developed. If you have any questions about your meals, speak with your patrol leader. If they or the cooks have questions, please call me (437-0740).

Tents: Space will be tight - that means 3 to 4 Scouts per tent. On Thursday you all need to organize into your sleeping arrangements.

Duty roster: I expect each patrol leader to prepare a duty roster on Thursday. Help will be available as necessary.

Even if you are not coming on the campout, I still expect to see you at the meeting. Your patrols will need help and I'm sure that they will be glad to see you.

I almost forgot, Sub Sale tickets are due NEXT WEEK (10/11). Get out and SELL THOSE SUBS! The Troop really needs the funds in order to support the program that we want to deliver. 10 subs are required to qualify for the Campership next spring and 20 subs will qualify for whatever really cool prize the committee comes up with. Remember in the spring the prize was a complete Orikaso foldable mess kit.... Sub construction will occur on Saturday, 10/20 at 7:00 AM. If you cannot make it, please make sure you see Mr. Borcoche on Thursday to set up alternate plans to support our fundraiser.

ANNUAL DUES are due now. Please bring a $40 check made out to Troop 266 to the meeting this week and give it to Mrs. Chau.

Also, this Thursday is the LAST CHANCE to sign up for the Lonesome Lake backpacking and AMC hut overnight on December 8/9. Estimated cost is $47. We had a blast doing this last year - sign up and come along. We need to confirm our reservation with payment up-front, hence the early due date.

We will also have sign ups for interest in the November Pawtuckaway camp out (11/9-12). We will start planning this one next week.

December 1 is the Windham town Christmas Tree lighting and bonfire. We always have a great time supporting the town with this one. Put it on your calendars now (counts towards service hours...).

Speaking of service hours, we have several Scouts who are or will be working on their Eagle projects over the coming weeks. Show them your support by helping them out. What goes around comes around. They will send out information as to when and where they may need assistance.

Mid-January is the Klondike derby and freeze out. Hope for snow!

That about covers it for now (I think...). Oh yeah, print this one and the other one I sent and post them on your fridge!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 9/19/07

Great picnic last week! I hope you all had a lot of fun.

Thursday night we will finalize preparation for this weekend's campout, work on advancements, and hand out the advancements from summer camp. I would also like to get an update from all of the Life Scouts regarding your Eagle projects.

Upcoming events:

9/22-23: Backpack/campout/service project at new Windham campsite. There are a lot of opportunities for advancement with this one as well as a chance to help a fellow Scout.

10/5-7: NH Jamboree, Gunstock recreation area. This is a great time. Last chance to sign up this week!

10/20: Sub sandwich delivery. Tickets were distributed last week at the picnic. Go out and sell as many subs as you can. The Troop needs the funds both for gear and to help pay for our activities.

See you all Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 8/10/2007

Please print this and post on the fridge!

Great job last week at the elections! Sorry I could not be there to help, but it looks like you guys did great. The new Troop leadership for the Fall, 2007 term is:

Senior Patrol Leader: Kevin Delfosse
Assistant SPL's: Tim Swierad, David Pierson
Scribe: Ben Gallo
Quartermaster: Tyler Caron
Librarian: Sean Joseph
Historian: Matthew Raison
Chaplain's Aide: Fred Parker
Troop Guides: John Pierson (Monkeys), Matthew Donnelly (Dragons)
Patrol Leaders:
Vikings: Jake Simard
Lightning: Chris Borcoche
Eagles: John Reese
Black Dragons: Vallen Indelicato
Monkey: Greg Samsel

Congratulations to all of our new leaders. Please note that this group was elected by the majority of Scouts at the meeting. If you were not at the meeting or did not vote for the winners, please respect the wishes of the majority and provide your full support to the leadership. In order for the Troop to be successfully boy run, you need to allow the leadership to lead.

The new Patrol Leader's Council (PLC) met tonight at my house for the first Troop meeting planning session. They developed plans for upcoming Troop meetings and activities. The following outlines the major points of the plan:

9/13: Recruiting picnic at Griffin Park, 5:30 PM. Bring a friend. The PLC has chosen some games to keep things lively...
9/22-23: New Campsite campout. This is an opportunity to learn/teach/practice backpacking skills, wrap up cooking merit badge requirements, participate in Junior Leader Training, and earn some service hours. This is a unique experience that we have never tried. Sign ups available on Thursday night.
10/5-7: New Hampshire Jamboree at Gunstock Recreation Area. This is the big one - 10,000 Scouts, merit badge midway, tons of activities, fireworks, lots of fun. This only comes around every 4 years, so now is the time to do it! Sign up on Thursday.
10/20: Sub Sale. Details to follow.

In addition, the PLC planned the meetings for each week through most of October. We have a great plan, fun stuff, lots of advancement, and plans for more. Bring your friends this week and show them what Scouting is all about.

See you all Thursday!
Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 9/4/2007

Print this out and post on the fridge!

Good kick off meeting last week. We have some great activities planned for this year, but first, ELECTIONS! That's right, this week we have Troop elections. Anybody who needs a leadership position for advancement (especially those who are working toward Eagle) should seriously plan to run. I covered the rules at the meeting, but here they are again:

Senior Patrol Leader: At the meeting I said Life and above, but given the level of interest, I have decided that Star rank and above will be considered for this position. This is the most important position in the Troop. Any boy interested in this position should be prepared to attend all Patrol Leaders Council meetings (monthly), most camp outs/activities, and most Troop meetings.

Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders: Chosen by the SPL, to be approved by the Scoutmaster (yes, that's me). First Class and above only. Since I will not be at the meeting on Thursday, I will speak with the newly elected SPL before any final decisions are made. ASPL's will be informed by Thursday, 9/13.

Quartermaster: Responsible for the Troop gear, this position is to be filled by First Class and above Scouts.

Scribe: Attends PLC meetings and keeps minutes (good writing skills and access to e-mail important). First Class and above.

Historian: Produces the newsletter for the Court of Honor, this is a great opportunity for working on the Communications merit badge....

Librarian: Keep track of the Troops' merit badge books and other resources - give Jake a break and run for this one....

Chaplain Aid: Responsible for helping to keep reverence in the program, the Chaplain Aide keeps track of religious holidays, prepares grace for ceremonies and outings, and assists with all faith services at camp outs.

Patrol Leaders: Each patrol is responsible for electing it's leaders (First Class and above), however, the Monkeys will need a First Class or above PL (or a Troop Guide appointed by the Scoutmaster). Assistant Patrol Leaders are selected by the Patrol Leader. PL's are expected to attend the monthly Patrol Leaders Council meeting.

That covers it for elections. Remember, the picnic is on Thursday, 9/13. Try to recruit a friend to join the Troop. We're going to have a great year - the more the merrier. By the way, trying to recruit new members is a First Class requirement.

There will be a sign up sheet for the Foster's Pond camp out planned for the weekend of 9/15-16. This will be a great time to wrap up some requirements, especially for guys who need cooking for advancement. Convince your patrol to come along. We'll play some games, maybe make ballistas.... Oh yeah, if you need camping nights for the Eagle required Camping merit badge this is a GREAT one - close to home and easy to get to.

The NH Jamboree is the weekend of 10/5-10/7 - 2 nights at Gunstock. This is going to be a great event. 10,000 Scouts will be coming for the festivities which will include a merit badge midway, many activities and great times.

That about covers it for now. I will not be at the meeting on Thursday due to the Salem High open house. Have a great election and pick the best leaders for the next 6 months!

In Scouting,

Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 8/28/2007

Are you all looking forward to starting school again! Sure you are (and your parents are too, I'll bet...)!

With the start of the school season we also start Scouts. Our first meeting will be this Thursday at 7:30 at Center School. The guys who could make it to the planning meeting put together some great ideas that we'll review and we'll lay out the plan for the year. Our recruiting picnic is scheduled for 9/13 at Griffin Park. All of you guys working towards First Class should try to bring a friend (trying to recruit a new member is a First Class requirement). More details will follow.

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 8/15/07

Monday night we will be holding our annual planning meeting at my house from 6:30 - 9:00. This is a really important meeting as we will be planning our activities for the upcoming year. This meeting is mandatory for the Patrol Leader's Council (SPL, ASPL's, PL's, Scribe) and strongly suggested for all other Scouts. I would also like all registered Assistant Scoutmasters to attend. It is not necessary for all parents, however, if you are interested in helping define the Troop's annual plan you are welcome to attend.

I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All, 6/19/07

Also, I need parent volunteers to stay all or part of the week. Right now we have only 1, me. Since we have so many boys going we can actually send up to 5 adults! Please consider signing up.

It is important for one parent to stay during this meeting. I will make it as short as possible.

Also, the planning meeting originally planned for Saturday is postponed. I do not have a make up date yet. I will keep you posted.

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

5/16/07

Thanks to all who came to the Flying Tigers event in Derry on Saturday. We had a great time and learned a lot about flying RC planes. Thanks especially to Mr. Raison and the Tigers club as they put on a great event! The group did a great job training the boys and giving everybody a chance to fly.

Big weekend coming up - Sub Sale! Saturday, 7:00 AM at the Presbyterian Church. All Scouts are required to be there with a parent and a cooler with a ZIPLOC bag of ice. The funds from this event go back to you in the form of camperships - be there!

This week's meeting will cover some basics for the Scouts and Tenderfoots (Tenderfeets?) to advance you to the next level. We will set up plans for summer camp and lay out the plans for the other summer activties. Older Scouts need plans to get merit badges. There is a lot to be done!

I will pick the final color guard for the "Fest-a-Ball" tournament on Saturday. Remember, this event will directly follow the sub sale (and you will get short delivery routes to be there...). The color guard will need to be at Griffin Park at 10:00.

May 28 (Memorial Day): Memorial Day Parade (this counts as service hours). I will have a sign up sheet this week. Plan to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00. It should end by 11:00.

June 1-3: Shooting sports camporee, Pelham Fish and Game.

Mid-June: Backpacking trip - 1st class and above. It will be either the weekend of 6/16 or 6/23.

5/7/07

Congratulations to the boys who attended Encampment weekend! I hear that it was successful and I look forward to hearing your stories about it this week!

IMPORTANT: This week's meeting will be held at MIDDLE SCHOOL. Pass the word!

We are coming in to the home stretch! One month until the Court of Honor (June 7th). Let's get the advancements completed. If you are working on merit badges, focus and get 'em done! We will work on rank advancements in the coming weeks. If you are close to the next rank, please see me or one of the Assistant Scoutmasters. We will do our very best to get you moved up!

SUB SALE TICKETS ARE DUE by Thursday! In order to qualify for the benefits of participation (including the campership money and prizes), you MUST turn in your tickets this week!

This week's meeting (5/10): AT MIDDLE SCHOOL! Finalize First Aid merit badge, turn in sub tickets, plan summer camp. Summer camp payments and $10 for Shooting Sports camporee are both due this week!

May 12 (this Saturday): Flying Tigers from 10-2

May 19 (next Saturday): Sub preparation and distribution.

May 28 (Memorial Day): Memorial Day Parade (this counts as service hours). I will have a sign up sheet this week. Plan to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00. It should end by 11:00.

June 1-3: Shooting sports camporee, Pelham Fish and Game.

The PLC met tonight to work on additional plans. Right now, we are planning a mountain bike ride for August and we started discussions for the 2007-8 year. If there are activities that you would like the Troop to do, tell your Patrol Leader. We have an annual planning meeting coming up in June and we need your input!

Over the coming weeks, we will be focusing a lot of effort on summer camp planning, advancement, and the annual plan for next year. If you are approaching Eagle, please see me to discuss your project and leadership requirements. If you have not been to a meeting in a long time, I need to speak to you!

See you Thursday,
Mr. Pierson

5/3/07

Hi All,

I hope you had a great spring break. Those of us who made it on the Martha's Vineyard trip did! The weather was perfect, the rides were fun, the food was good, and everybody returned safe and sound. We all participated in 3 separate rides: 10 miles, 15 miles, and 25 miles. We lunched on the beach, enjoyed ice cream, and sang songs around the campfire. Mr. Ostberg will be posting pictures on the web within the next few days. Make sure to check them out.

There is A LOT going on over the next few weeks! First, Encampment Weekend is this weekend! We have 12 boys going to represent the Troop, support the Chuck Wagon Derby, and work on the E-Prep merit badge. As noted by Mr. Caron earlier today, if you are signed up for the weekend, please make sure that you attend this week's meeting to finalize plans. TIME IS TIGHT!

IF YOU HAVE NOT PICKED UP YOUR SUB SALE TICKETS, THIS WEEK IS YOUR LAST CHANCE! Remember, participation is required in order to receive the Campership money from this sale. Just to re-cap the rules, ALL of the money from this sale, after expenses, is returned to the Scouts for Camperships to fund summer camp. In order to receive the money, you must sell at least 10 subs and participate in the preparation and distribution of the sandwiches. Over the past several years, the payout for camperships has run around $80-90 per Scout. In addition, you each earn $1 of "Scout bucks" per sub that can be used for camp, activities, or gear at the Scout Shop. If you sell 20 subs, you are eligible for the prize (which will probably be announced this week...). Finally, the top 3 sellers earn gift certificates at EMS. Bottom line: GET OUT AND SELL THOSE SUBS! Help fund your Scouting activities!

We will be working on advancement this week. Come prepared to do your fitness test if you haven't done it yet - we really need to get them ALL done at this meeting so that you can earn your Tenderfoot ranking by the Court of Honor! We'll need the help of you older Scouts to run these tests....

We will also be collecting the payments for the Shooting Sports Camporee. The Troop Committee has graciously agreed to pay the registration fee (using some of the proceeds of the Fall Sub Sale), so the cost for this trip will only be $10 for the food. Please bring it to this week's meeting. The registration form is due soon!

The meeting next week (5/10) will NOT be at Center School. We will announce where the meeting will be by this week's meeting. Next week should be the completion of the First Aid merit badge for all those who have been working on it. Also next week, the balance of your camp fees are due. If you paid the $50 deposit by March 15, you owe $235. If not, please bring a check for $295. If you do not pay by next week's meeting, the cost increases another $15, to $310. Camp is the most important aspect of Boy Scouts. Please see me at next week's meeting to make sure that we can get your son to camp!

Please note that next week's meeting is MANDATORY for summer camp participants. We need to go over merit badge plans and start determining tent mates.

Saturday, May 12 is the Flying Tigers. This is an opportunity to learn how to fly a radio controlled plane with skilled instructors. It will be a great time. Sign up this week!

Saturday May 19 is the Sub Sale. This is the day we make and deliver the subs. Be prepared to spend all morning at this activity. If you have a known conflict, please speak to Mr. Borcoche.

June 1-3 is the Shooting Sports Camporee at Pelham Fish and Game.

June 7th is the Court of Honor. We need to work hard over the next few weeks to wrap up advancements. Please work with each other, the Assistant Scoutmasters, and I to master the skills and get signed off on your advancement requirements.

I think that about covers it.

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

4/10/07

Hi All,

Mostly a re-tread from last week since, unfortunately, we had to cancel due to the unseasonable (or was that unreasonable?) snow storm...

SUMMER CAMP UPDATE: Balances are due by MAY 15th. Class 3 med forms are required. they can be down loaded from the following link: http://www.dwcbsa.org/camps/3MedFrm.pdf. Also, camp information can be found at: http://www.dwcbsa.org/camps/Griswold/index.htm. Choose Parents Guide to get complete details like what you need to do, what your son should bring, etc. The other links also provide a lot of additional information that we will be covering with the boys over the coming months in preparation for camp. We will not be sending a patrol to Camp Bell this year as there has been no interest, so you can focus on the Hidden Valley portions of the website.

This week: UNIFORM INSPECTION. Bonus points if you have the updated Quality Unit award on your uniform! Mr. Northcutt will be back for more First Aid Merit Badge work. We will also plan menus for the Vineyard Bike Trip (only 2 weeks to go!). Older Scouts: please be prepared to discuss your plans for your advancement. I will spend some time with you all to support your plans and come up with activities for you. We will also distribute SUB SALE Tickets this week.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Bike Trip: Mr. Joseph is doing a great job organizing this one! We are going to Martha's Vineyard from 4/21-4/24. If you did not bring your $50 deposit last week, please bring it on THURSDAY. I believe there are a few spots left. You might still be able to get one if you ask Mr. Joseph nicely. If you have not paid, your slot may be at risk!

Encampment Weekend: 5/4-6 at Camp Carpenter ($10). We'll be there to help with the Chuck Wagon Derby and this is a great opportunity to work on the e-prep merit badge. Hopefully, you will all earn the First Aid badge prior to this event (it's required to get e-prep). The sign up sheet will be out on Thursday. We will plan to arrive by 5:00 Friday evening and leave after the awards ceremony on Sunday (probably by 11:00 or so).

Flying Tigers: 5/12. This is a great time! You will learn how to fly remote control airplanes and have an opportunity to fly them. We will put out a sign up sheet this week.

Sub Sale: May 19: Plan to make and distribute subs this day. Participation is required in order to get credit for the camperships! As noted above, tickets will be distributed this week.

Shooting Sports Camporee: 6/1-3 at Pelham Fish and Game ($30). Okay, I won't say it this time. Oh yes I will, this is going to be a BLAST! The activity has been opened up to all ages in order to make sure that there were enough Scouts. The sign up sheet will be out on Thursday - CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITIES NOW! I will start collecting deposits (full $30) to reserve your spot this week.

Flag Burning Ceremony: 6/14, Flag Day, at the cemetery on the plain at 6:00 PM. Jake Simard and Ben Gallo will be collecting the flags. We will need a contingent to support the ceremony before our meeting that night.

Backpacking Trip, mid-June: Mr. O is trying to put something together for First Class and above. If you are interested, lobby with Mr. O to get this one planned.

Summer Camp: Still no apparent interest in Camp Bell. If you are interested in Bell, please let me know as soon as possible.

White water or other trip for August? If you want to do a specific activity, please let the Scoutmaster crew or the PLC know.

See you Thursday!
Mr. Pierson

Hi All,

Once again, lot's of info - print and put on the fridge!

The "fools" (23 Scouts and 5 adults) had a great time up at Hidden Valley last weekend! We had fantastic weather, great food, lots of advancement, and coyotes! The coyotes kept their distance, but they sure made a lot of racket and left some poop on the trails (evidence of wildlife for the 2nd class requirement #5...). No major pranks on March 32nd, but it was fun all the same.

Thanks to all who came out to help with the Town Egg Hunt. 22 Boy Scouts showed up to help and we got a lot of praise from town officials and citizens alike. If you heard any feedback, good or bad, please let me know so that we can improve it for next year! You can receive up to 2 hours of service for this activity. You should note the time you arrived and left in your book if you are keeping track for advancement (required for boys who are already Tenderfoot rank seeking 2nd Class and 1st Class Scouts seeking Star rank).

SUMMER CAMP UPDATE: Balances are due by MAY 15th. Class 3 med forms are required. they can be down loaded from the following link: http://www.dwcbsa.org/camps/3MedFrm.pdf. 3/28/07

Hi All,

There is a lot of information here. Please print out a copy and put it on your fridge!

Great job last week! Thanks again to Mr. Letizio for speaking to you all as an elected representative. If you need that requirement and you were there, please make sure to get your book signed off! Also, great job on the eggs! About 2800 eggs were successfully stuffed and will be ready for us on Saturday morning.

This week's meeting: THERE WILL BE A PLC MEETING AT 7:00. Senior Patrol, Patrol Leaders, and the Scribe need to be there to plan for upcoming meetings and activities. Mr. Northcutt will return to work on the First Aid merit badge. If you had any homework, now is the time to get it done. Also, we will go through final preparation for the Fool's Paradise. Please be prepared to review the menus, plan for gear, prepare duty rosters, etc.

Town Easter Egg Hunt: Show up at the Town Hall at 10:00 Saturday morning in order to start hiding the eggs. For everybody who needs service hours, this is an excellent way to earn them (and it's fun too).

Fool's Paradise ($10): We will leave right after the egg hunt on Saturday, returning Sunday afternoon around 3 or 4. Bring a bag lunch to have before we leave. The current forecast is dry, 40's during the day and 20's at night. It is likely to be muddy there, be prepared! We will go on a hike, work on woods tools, and build fires. Let's plan a great campfire. The Venture Crew will be there too. Plan some pranks (or be ready to have some pulled on you...). Keep them appropriate please.

Bike Trip: Mr. Joseph is doing a great job organizing this one! We are going to Martha's Vineyard from 4/21-4/24. IF YOU ARE NOT SIGNED UP, THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE! We need to finalize reservations. BRING $50 DEPOSIT THIS WEEK.

Flying Tigers: 5/12 (I think - Mr. Raison, please confirm on Thursday). This is a great time! You will learn how to fly remote control airplanes and have an opportunity to fly them.

Sub Sale: May 19: Plan to make and distribute subs this day. Participation is required in order to get credit for the camperships!

Shooting Sports Camporee: 6/1-3 at Pelham Fish and Game ($30). I know you're tired of this saying, but, this is going to be a BLAST! This has been opened up to all ages in order to make sure that there were enough Scouts. The sign up sheet will be out on Thursday - CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITIES NOW!

Flag Burning Ceremony: 6/14, Flag Day, at the cemetary on the plain at 6:00 PM. Jake Simard and Ben Gallo will be collecting the flags. We will need a contingent to support the ceremony before our meeting that night.

Backpacking Trip: Mr.

WOW - There sure is a lot going on! Let your friends know - Troop 266 does great things!

3/21/07

Hi All,

Another good meeting last week. Thank You again to Mr. Northcutt for leading the First Aid Merit Badge course. Hard to believe, but NEXT WEEKEND (3/31) is the Spring campout or Fool's Paradise. What does that mean for you? If you are a new Scout, we need to review packing lists tomorrow night. If you are a new Scout parent, please see me at the meeting to discuss gear and the general process for BSA camping. For others, menu planning will be a priority.

In addition to camp preparation, this week we have 2 major activities: Mr. Letizio will be covering the First Class Citizenship requirement. If you don't have First Class requirement #5, you need to be there. We will also be stuffing Easter eggs for the Town Easter Egg Hunt to be held on Saturday, March 31. We need ALL HANDS ON DECK to get this done at the meeting.

Next week we will continue with First Aid, finalize the Fool's Paradise, and start preparations for the bike trip. Remember to sign up! This will be a GREAT time. Dates: April 21-24, probably on Martha's Vineyard.

May 4-6 is Encampment weekend! Throughout this weekend, there will be an opportunity to work on many of the E-Prep Merit Badge requirements, culminating in a district wide search and rescue operation to meet the final requirement (we will work on other E-prep requirements in the weeks before this). This is an excellent opportunity!

June 1-3: Shooting Sports Camporee: The First Class requirement has been eliminated, but we should still get you there for other planned activities (June backpacking perhaps...). In any event, this Camporee will be a BLAST!

July 8-14: Camp Bell. So far nobody has expressed interest in Bell this year. Please let me know on Thursday if you are interested. We will need a minimum of 6 to participate (plus 2 adult leaders). Ask any of the guys who have been to Bell before - it's a lot of fun. If you go to both camps, you will save $25 on the cost of the 2nd camp.

July 22-28: Hidden Valley. We've had some sign up - room for more! This is the best opportunity for advancement.

August: looking for ideas: canoe, white water, hike and/or camp out.... Let me, your Patrol Leader, or one of the Assistant Scoutmasters know if you have any ideas or preferences.

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All,

Great meeting last week! We're making a lot of progress with advancement and the guys heading up to the Whites this weekend have a solid plan. This week we will start work on the First Aid merit badge, continue planning the Fool's paradise campout (including review of what to bring), and wrap up planning for the night in the whites.

Next week Mr. Letizio will come to the meeting and lead the Troop in the First Class citizenship requirement. We will also stuff Easter eggs for the town Easter egg hunt to be held on March 31st. This is a full night! New Scouts should bring packs for inspection.

The following week is our last meeting before the Fool's Paradise. We will need to make sure that everybody is prepared for the camp out!

April 5 we will continue with First Aid and start preparations for the bike trip. Remember to sign up! This will be a GREAT time. Dates: April 21-24, probably on Martha's Vineyard.

May 4-6 is Encampment weekend! At the end of this weekend, there will be an opportunity to participate in a district wide search and rescue operation to meet the final requirement of E-Prep (we will start work on the E-prep merit badge in the weeks before this). This is an excellent opportunity!

June 1-3: Shooting Sports Camporee: Fisrt Class and above. Do what you can to get to First Class! This one will be a BLAST!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

3/5/07

Hi All,

Hope you had a great vacation. We did, but it was cut a little short for me. I'm writing to you from Germany right now, but I will be back for this week's meeting.

This week: Webelos first night. We will have the parents there for an orientation. All of these guys should be able to recite the Oath and Law (all are Arrow of Light holders). We should be able to knock off most of the reqruiements for Scout. I need your help to do this.

THIS WEEK IS UNIFORM INSPECTION. Come prepared.

Also this week: BRING YOUR CAMP DEPOSIT ($50). If you are planning to attend both camps, we need deposits for both. We will send the deposits up to camp before March 15th in order to lock in the preferential rate.

We will also start preparing for the Fool's Paradise camp out which takes place March 31/April1 at Hidden Valley Scout Camp. This is a great way to get into the spring camping season, dust off your skills, train others, and have a generally great time.

Other upcoming events:
April: Island bike trip
May: Sub Sale, Flying Tigers, Encampment weekend
June: Shooting Sports Camporee
July: Summer Camp
August: TBD.

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

2/23/07

Hi All,

Boy the last two weeks have been hectic. Sorry for the confusion 2 weeks ago, the school threw us a bit of a curve ball. Last week's meeting was good, with a number of boys making progress towards rank advancement. We also heard about summer camp - hope you guys are all psyched for it. Please bring a check for your summer camp deposit ($50) this week. You will get the best rate if you pay your deposit before 3/15.

This week:
PLC MEMBERS: Please come at 7:00 for a short PLC meeting.

Bring a deposit for the Winter Night in the Whites Carter Dome AMC hut overnight. There are only a few spots available - first come first served. First Class and above only as it is a pretty strenuous hike in. The boys who are coming on this overnight will spend part of the meeting planning menus and going over gear checklists.

We will also continue to work on advancements for the skill Scouts. We need to get you guys to First Class. Come prepared to work on your knots, lashings, map reading, and other skills.

For the advanced Scouts, in addition to helping with the skill Scouts, I would like for you to bring a list of the Eagle required merit badges that you still need. We will put together plans for each of you to get these badges.

Next week: VACATION - No Meeting.

March 8: Webelos First Night: looking for ideas to make the first night a fun one. A number of these guys are in the ski club, so they will be showing up late. The key for these new Scouts: prepare them for the Fool's Paradise camp out.

March 15th: Meeting plan to be determined.

March 17th: St. Patrick's day and the Night in the Whites campout.

March 22nd: Mr. Letizio has offered to speak to the Troop about your rights and obligations as a citizen (required for First Class). We will also stuff Easter eggs for the town Easter Egg hunt.

March 31: A new conflict has come up - this is the date of the town Easter egg hunt and also the planned date for the Fool's paradise. We will consider alternatives.

April: Island bike trip. We will work on the cycling merit badge there (for those who went to the Cape 2 years ago, we could probably wrap it up).

May: Encampment weekend. I just learned tonight that there will be a planned e-prep rescue activity at the end of this camp out. This is a great opportunity. We will investigate running this merit badge in the weeks before Encampment so that you will be prepared to wrap it up with this sometimes difficult to do activity.

June: Shooting sports camporee, First Class and above.

July: Summer camp!

August: Canoe trip?

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

Hi All,

Great meeting last week! Good games, and you all did well with the "seconds to think and act" exercises. Great job!

ATTENTION: THIS WEEK'S MEETING WILL BE HELD AT MIDDLE SCHOOL!

This week we are scheduled to hold elections. Only one Scout has presented himself to me as a candidate for SPL and several have identified their candidacy for Patrol Leader or Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. It would be best for the Troop if we could have multiple candidates for ALL positions. Please consider taking up the challenge of leadership - it is an advancement requirement and an important contribution to the success of the Troop.

A couple of questions came up with regard to leadership:
1) Time requirement: Leaders are required to spend a little more time than troop members. We hold monthly Patrol Leader Council meetings (about 1.5 hours). I try to schedule the meetings based upon availability of a quorum (look it up). In these meetings we plan the Troop calendar including meeting plans and activities. Leaders must also make sure that all clean up activities are completed.

2) Activities: Leaders are expected to participate in as many activities as possible. For the SPL in the upcoming term, I expect participation in at least one of our summer camps.

3) Responsibilities: Leaders are expected to set the example for the rest of the Troop: in uniform, behavior, and participation.

Please send me an e-mail (sajdc@comcast.net) with your intention to run for a position. I need to know in advance as I may not be at the meeting on Thursday due to the Center School concerts - however, Elections Will Go On - BE PREPARED.

NEXT UPCOMING ACTIVITY: Winter Carnival: 2/10. We have a list of volunteers and will review on Thursday. This will be a fun time.

Ice Fishing, 2/17, Cobbett's Pond. Great time - plan to be there!

Winter camp out: "A night in the Whites," March 10. Please let Mr. Ostberg or I know if you are interested. Could be hut or tent, maybe snow shoe in (if any white stuff falls...). Let us know your preferences...

Webelos cross over March 8. Think of ideas to make this a great night for them!

Lots of other stuff coming up: Fool's Paradise; bike trip, flying tigers, sub sale, encampment weekend, shooting sports camporee, summer camp, canoe trip??? Tell your friends, bring them along - this is great stuff! If it's not great in your opinion - LET US KNOW - this is YOUR Troop! Help us plan, or, better yet, RUN FOR A POSITION OF LEADERSHIP!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

1/25/07

Hi All,

Sorry we missed last week's meeting, the late power shut down at Middle School threw a wrench into our plans.

THIS WEEK'S MEETING WILL BE HELD AT MIDDLE SCHOOL! We are planning games for all and advancement activities for the Scouts who need them.

If you are interested in running for a leadership position, please tell John or I this week. Troop elections are coming up soon. A few rules:
Patrol Leader: First Class or above
Senior Patrol Leader: Star or above
Other elected positions: 2nd Class or Above
Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders: Chosen by SPL w/ Scoutmaster approval
Troop Guides: Appointed by Scoutmaster

Upcoming Events:
Winter Carnival (2/3): Need volunteers to staff station for Cub Scouts.

Ice Fishing (2/17): Cobbett's Pond providng it is frozen... should be with this weather.

Interested in an overnight in February? Let me know - we'll see if we can pull off another Hut hike....

March will be busy with the new Webelos cross overs and the build up to spring and summer camping.

Spring Break Bike Trip: Mr. Joseph is arranging this. It will be a great time!!

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

1/10/06

Hi All,

Hope you had a great, warm, weekend. 19 of your fellow Scouts did at the Klondike Derby and "sweat" out (too warm to freeze). There was a little rain, but we all had a great time! It was so warm, we even found a snake in the grass and kept him at our station as a mascot (we called him Bob).

This week's meeting will be the Court of Honor and dinner. THE MEETING STARTS AT 6:00! Dinner at 6:15. This is an opportunity to cheer on your fellow Scouts for their achievements and be recognized for your own in front of your family. The Troop has decided to provide the meal for this event, so please come and enjoy dinner and the recognition.

Advancement will remain a key theme as we go forward this year. Moving all eligible boys to First Class before June is a high priority for the Scoutmaster Corps. Please work with us to help you advance. Let us know what you need, and, when we offer that activity, PARTICIPATE.

You guys are great and you're doing a great job, keep it up!

Upcoming events:
Hampshire Hills: 1/19-20

Winter Carnival: 2/10: Need volunteers to help man a station - this is like a winter version of the Chuckwagon Derby for the Cub Scouts. Participating as a Boy Scout Troop is a great way to give back to the program.

Winter activity: Feb TBD: Snowshoe hike/camp out possibility. Let me know if your are interested. I need an adult leader and a Scout to step up to run this one.

Webelos First Night: 3/8: The new guys are coming, the new guys are coming! Let's make them feel welcome!

Spring camp out/Fools Paradise: 3/30-4/1: Who knows, maybe we'll have snow for this one. April Fools! In any weather, this is a great time, camping out up at Hidden Valley. A great way to bring the new cross over Scouts into the program.

Bike Trip: 4/21-24: Location TBD, could be the Cape or one of the islands, depends upon Mr. Joseph (trip leader) and you guys - where do you want to go?

Encampment Weekend: 5/4-6. Fun competitions, supporting the Chuck Wagon Derby (last year we manned the BB range...).

Sub Sale: May TBD: Sell a lot - the money goes to YOUR summer camp!

Flying Tigers Remote Control Airplanes: May TBD. This event got rave reviews 2 years ago. Looking forward to it again.

Shooting Sports Camporee: 6/1-2: This looks like a "blast." Get it? Well, anyway, should be a lot of fun - need to be First Class to attend...

Camp Bell: 7/8-14: Bell is a unique experience. I urge you to try to attend. There are a lot of great activities and experiences here, and the price is right.

Hidden Valley: 7/22-7/28: A great way to advance - get those hard to achieve merit badges or head out on SPOKE. Lot's of great opportunities here.

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson

>
> Happy New Year! I hope that you and your families had a great holiday season!
>
> Now back to it! The Troop will meet as usual this Thursday, 7:30 at Center School. The primary topic will be final prep for the Klondike Derby. If you are going to the Klondike, even if it is only for the day and not the overnight before, it is REALLY important for you to come to this meeting. If you are not going on the Klondike, it is still important for you to come and work on your own advancement.
>
> Speaking of advancement, if you need a SM conference and/or a Board of Review, please let me know by Wednesday evening (437-0740). This way we can be prepared and make sure that you are recognized at next week's Court of Honor.

> Klondike Derby: 3 Patrols will pull 3 sleds around Pelham Fish and Game Club this weekend, competing and defending the honor of Troop 266. Give them lots of support on Thursday as they finalize preparations.

12/19/06

Hi All,

First, yes, there is a meeting this week! We will be working on lashings and we will also finalize tot'n chip requirements for those who need it. Also, if you need the physical testing requirement for Tenderfoot, please let your patrol leader know at the beginning of the meeting.

Klondike Update: At the meeting on Thursday, there were 16 boys making up exactly 2 sleds (we are not allowed more than 8 boys per sled). At this point, if you were not at the meeting, I will have to put you on a waitlist. I can make an exception if you can identify at least 3 other boys with whom you wish to participate and you all show up at the meeting this Thursday. In that case, we can put together another sled (minimum 4 boys per sled).

There will be a meeting this Saturday for ALL Klondike participants, location TBD. One patrol needs to build it's sled, the other must complete the commando ropes. Both need to go through the material list and make sure they have everything or know where it is going to come from. It is likely that we will have another meeting a week from Saturday as well to finalize planning and hone skills.

Court of Honor: Put it on your calendars, January 11. We will be recognizing all achievements and advancements made this fall. If all you need for the next rank is the Scoutmaster conference and a Board of Review, please get in touch with me as soon as possible (sajdc@adelphia.net).

Hampshire Hills: It's coming up fast! Sign up now! Bring your friends! Great recruting opportunity for you guys who need it for first class!

We need a plan for February. Some ideas include skiing/snowsports, snow shoe hike, another AMC hut overnight, or ice fishing (late in month). I'm open to other suggestions. We need a Scout and an adult to take this on. I also need some volunteers to help with the District Winter Carnival.

New Scouts will start in March (officially March 8) and we will have the spring shakedown campout (aka Fool's Paradise) at the end of the month. Start planning your (harmless) pranks now....

Bike trip update: Mr. Joseph has offered to help put together the April bike trip (spring break). I would like a senior Scout who is interested in going to work with Mr. Joseph and I on planning this trip.

In May, the District is holding another Encampment Weekend/Chuck Wagon Derby. Last year we assisted with BB guns. This year, who knows?

Looking forward to June, there is another District Camporee, based upon shooting sports - must be First Class or above to attend! We are also considering another canoe trip. Talk to Mr. Ostberg if you are interested.

Summer Camp: That's right, summer camp. We currently have reservations for both Camp Bell (week 3) and Hidden Valley (week 5). We will be speaking in more detail about these camps VERY soon!

See you Thursday!

In Scouting,
Mr. Pierson
