Since the more arcane rituals seem to be embraced by all the first-time newbies, who slavishly follow them despite having no idea from whence they originated, the annual backstory explanation for beginners, to assist their better judgment:

- CLAPPING -
The old habit of credit-clapping just came naturally out of less well-known credits throwing off an overenthusiastic audience--
For example:
"Day the Earth Stood Still"
(clapclapclapclap!!)
"Starring Michael Rennie"
(clapclapclapclap!!)
"Directed by Robert Wise"
(clapclapclapclap!!)
"Written by Edmund H. North"
(cla...HUH???)
Naturally, by the time credits would get to Editing and Producing, there were quite a few "cla...HUH??"'s, and the practice for one false-alarm clap for every credit would catch on by the second or third movie...

- WHEAT CHEX!! RICE CHEX!! -
Chalk this one up to the "Space Patrol" episodes, SF18
Being live-TV episodes, they had to do their own commercials for the good cereal people at Ralston...
And as our young space cadet talked the sales pitch, we saw the onscreen cereals revolve past on a turntable--
BOTH of 'em: Wheat chex...Rice chex...Wheat chex...Rice Chex...
You can write the rest of the story yourself. : )

- GRRRRR!! -
Easy one--The Streamline Pictures "Akira" dub, SF16:
Seems ol' Carl Macek never *did* quite get the hang of how to convincingly dub anime characters gritting their teeth in determination/frustration...Which the General in the story seemed to do an odd lot of--
Next movie on the agenda that year was "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers", and dang, if General Hanley (or was it Major Huglin?) didn't bear an uncanny physical resemblance to Ol' Growly...

- MARK!! -
Already covered: See threads on "Planet of the Vampires"

- DUCK DODGERS....IN THE TWENTY-FOURTH-AND-A-HALFTH CENNN-TURYYY!! -
Self-explanatory: Remember, in this one instance, it's polite to point.

Any I missed, please fill in:
Point is, it may all look fun, but just so you know, there's a *reason* for everything we do...
