Y2K at MV

Y2K at MV

As the year 2000 approaches we know that some of you have questions about how the "Y2K bug" will affect your Internet connection. While there are no absolute guarantees, we can tell you what we know and believe about the situation.

Note that we may update this statement from time to time.
Last updated on November 17, 1999.

The Internet Protocol

The underlying IP protocol (that is, the way that packets are delivered between you and your Internet destinations) is not Y2K sensitive: there are no dates involved in delivering bits from one place to another. In some cases, the equipment involved in handling the IP protocol do use dates, mainly for keeping logs of information or for providing a clock source for other equipment. We believe that the equipment we use will not be susceptible to any problems related to their use of dates, and that even in the unlikely event that there is a problem it will not affect the delivery of IP data.

For reference, Y2K statements for some of the equipment and software that we use for IP routing are:

Internet Services

Services you use on the Internet may indeed involve dates, and whether these services are Y2K-sensitive may vary from service to service. This is something that is outside of our sphere.

Internet Services and Corporate Operation at MV

At MV, we have taken and continue to take steps to ensure that that our computers, routers, operating systems, and billing and accounting systems are Y2K-ready.

Servers at MV use the BSD/OS operating system, which is a version of UNIX. (The BSD/OS Y2K statement was also referenced above.)

Web services provided at MV use the Apache web server software - for reference, see the Apache Y2K statement.

We believe MV's billing, accounting, logging of data, and so forth to be not susceptible to the Y2K rollover problem. There are some remaining administrative areas where 2-digit years are in use but not in any ambiguous or problematic way, nevertheless we are working on stamping these out too.

That said, we doubt that anything in this world is perfect, and we will be prepared to deal with any glitches that have been overlooked.
