Normally we provide sufficient modem ports to accomodate peak usage periods, and then some-- and we always have more modems available than the maximum needed for normal times. But when a very unusual circumstance occurs, such as a heavy winter storm, you may experience some contention when dialing into our modems.
During such a time, we would appreciate your consideration for other modem users. If you have a specific set of tasks to do, have in mind what you need to do, and then log off, freeing up the modem for someone else. Even if you think there is no contention, you might hang up now and then just to give someone else a chance.
Note that we are not asking you not to do what you need to do on the Internet. We just want to make you aware of something that you might not have considered: that during a storm such as this, there may be heavy demand on our modems, and that a little consideration for others will help everyone.
Note: some ISPs establish "session limits" for dialup users, where each user may only be on for a few hours before they have to redial. MV has no interest in having those kinds of limits, but it is conceivable that we'd consider installing them during emergency situations such as a storm, in order to give everyone a fair chance to dial in.
Also, the same kinds of high demands placed on the Internet in general during a storm will be placed on the telephone system. When dialing our modems (or even when placing voice calls) you may encounter "all circuits busy" or "fast busy" conditions, or worse, from your telephone company or carrier.
