Peterborough, Dover, and Concord shell accounts moving

This change will occur on June 9, 1996, starting at about 1pm. It's expected to take 3-4 hours.

Because of the changing nature of Internet access, we'll be shutting down the shell systems gold.mv.net, jade.mv.net, and granite.mv.net . We originally set these systems up at local POPs to help with the access of usenet news; when we set them up, it was rational to keep all usenet news locally. The usenet news picture has changed drastically since then, though. Some time ago we began the process of centralizing the news storage, and this has led in a logical progression to the point where we can do better by also centralizing the shell accounts.

If you are a shell user on gold, jade, or granite, your account will be moved to the mv.mv.com shell machine. Your current email address will continue to work; people will be able to send mail to you the same way. However, your return address will change so that it is "@mv.mv.com" . e.g. if you were joe@gold.mv.net, you will become joe@mv.mv.com . Mail to joe@gold.mv.net will continue to reach you, but when you send mail out, it will appear to come from joe@mv.mv.com .

You will be able to log into your account the same way and use the same utilities and services that you currently use. If you read news, though, you will likely find two glitches:

Downtime

All accounts affected by this move will be inaccessible throughout the day while being moved. Incoming mail will be blocked while during this process, so that no incoming mail should be lost.
