- June 29/30 2008: mail server replacement
- MV Mail server will be down overnight Sunday, June 29/30, for
an overhaul. Follow this link for details.
- June 21, 2008: anniversaries
- Two more anniversaries have passed since the last updating of this
page. Hopefully we'll have a better vehicle for these things soon.
- June 21, 2006: anniversary
- MV Communications, Inc., turns 15.
- August 7, 2004: shell server migration update
- As mentioned in the
July newsletter,
the migration to the new shell server has been set to the weekend
of August 21-24, 2004. Please refer to the earlier note
on April 7 (see below), and the links found there.
- August 6, 2004: ns1.mv.net moved
- ns1.mv.net namesevice has been moved from its long-running
previous server host over to a new server hardware. This is
to migrate away from older hardware and its operating system, and
in the process to improve nameservice and reliability.
- June 18, 2004: ispc.org nameservers given new life
- MV has arranged to take over the operation of the ispc.org
domain name (the domain name for the now-defunct ISP/C trade group).
We are doing this for the purpose of continuing the operation of the
ispc.org secondary DNS nameservers, which are used for many of our
customer domains. We've mapped the ns1.ispc.org (etc) names to the
new ns1.dnsist.net (etc) servers (see the
DNSist project as mentioned
below). This helps to ease any transition burden.
These secondary nameservers are also still used by some other ISPs and
we have arranged to keep that DNS service operating for those who have
been in touch.
This entry added August 7, 2004
- May 27, 2004: ns3.dnsist.net up
- The third and last of the planned US-based
DNSist secondary DNS nameservers
is up and running in its California location. (See November 25, 2003
news entry.)
This entry added August 7, 2004
- April 7, 2004: new shell server progress
- As mentioned in a prior newsletter, a new shell server is
in the works. It will be under construction and test for some
weeks. Current shell account holders can access the system
even while it's being worked on: more info is available
here.
- March 31, 2004: ns2.mv.net upgraded
- The server hosting the ns2.mv.net nameserver has been retired
and replaced with a much more powerful server; the ns2.mv.net nameserver
has been moved to that new server. That server system also performed
some other duties, these services were moved as well.
- Dec 2003: Clarinet going away
- Effective January 1, 2004, the ClariNet news service will be
discontinued here at MV. See our December 2003
Newsletter for more details.
- Nov 25, 2003: ISP/C nameservers
- MV has long used secondary nameservice included as part of our
membership in ISP/C, a trade association for ISPs. Secondary nameservice
provides alternate domain name servers for our domains and our customer
domains, and it's best if these servers are located at physically
different locations on different parts of the Internet. The ISP/C
organization has fallen idle, at best, but its nameservers have
continued to operate. At this date the future of these nameservers
is uncertain, although the individual who was responsible for building
them originally is providing temporary service at his own expense and
on his own equipment. MV is beginning a project (see
www.dnsist.net)
to operate our own secondary nameservers at various locations in the US,
as well as exploring options to continue the ISP/C secondary nameserver
operations.
Note: this entry added long after the fact, on Aug 7 2004;
November 25, 2003 was the date of the dnsist.net registration.
- Sep 19, 2003: MV's newsletters
- We continue to provide a monthly newsletter to our
users. However, beginning this month we will no longer be
sending the newsletter to you via email or postal mail. The
newsletters will be posted online only, at
newsletters.mv.net .
- Sep 17, 2003: Verisign wildcards
- This week Verisign's registry service for the .net and .com
domains began injecting valid results for non-existent domains, so
that (among other things) people making typing mistakes in URLs may
be redirected to a search site operated by Verisign. We have
applied a patch to our nameservers to try to give the original
"non-existent" result instead.
- August 8, 2003: Round 2 of spam controls available
- The webmail/spam filtering interface now includes a number
of more advanced options for filtering your mail. In addition to
the DNSBL feature that has been available since the first release,
you can now set up various conditions and actions based on things
in the mail message. For example, you can choose to discard mail
that's sent to you from a particular domain or a sender. Or if
the subject contains a certain word, you can file the mail in
a special folder or you can forward it to another address. You can
set up various combinations of tests and actions and, of course,
still use the very popular DNSBL filtering.
Please go to webmail.mv.net
to check out these new controls.
Also, as mentioned in our July newsletter, the underlying mail
filtering engine, mvmf, is described at
www.mv.com/tools/mvmf.
(This will be of interest mainly to programmers and hackers.)
- May 21, 2003: webmail and spam filtering
- We've put up the first round of spam filtering, allowing you
to filter your mail based on tests against various DNS-based
blacklists. Whether you use these blacklists is completely up
to you. Note that this is the first peek into spam filtering
functions-- we've made the DNSBL functions available first, but
more will come in future revisions of the tool.
We also have a new webmail tool, which allows you access your
mailbox here at MV via our web server. Use the web interface to
manipulate your mailbox, access multiple folders, and send mail.
While we still expect that you will ordinarily use a mail program
to access your mailbox via POP3 and IMAP protocols, the webmail
interface can be used from any computer using a web browser.
Important: Although the spam filtering engine and the
webmail interface are two separate projects/tools, the webmail
interface is where you enable the spam filtering rules.
To check out the webmail interface and the DNSBL-based spam
filtering, go to webmail.mv.net
Note: Both the webmail utility and the DNSBL mail filtering are
new, and are considered to be in test mode. We'll appreciate your
using them and any feedback that you have, but be aware that as
with any new programs (and even old ones!), there can be bugs.
- April 29, 2003: New MA, VT, ME dialup numbers!
- Our dialup access now includes much of Massachusetts, Vermont,
and Maine. Check out our access numbers page
for more.
- April 29, 2003: access numbers finalized
- Our new set of access lines and numbers has now been fully fleshed out.
Please check our
access numbers page for the
full scoop.
- April 17, 2003: more bandwidth
- A new T3 backbone connection (clocked at 12Mbps) has come up
today. This bandwidth is carried over NEON fiber to Paetec's Boston
office. The addition of this circuit adds bandwidth and gives us
more routing diversity and redundancy. (Note: you can always check
our backbone connectivity by going to our home page at
www.mv.com and clicking on
the "About MV" link.)
- March 7, 2003: backup numbers added
- We've got some backup numbers to help with some congestion until our
new dialup pools can be expanded (soon, we hope!). See
here for details.
- Feb 26, 2003: BNH numbers out, then changed
- We lost our BNH numbers, and made quick arrangement for some
replacements. More info
here
- Feb 25, 2003: mail server software changeover
- The long-awaited software change on our mail server was done
overnight. Although there were some bumps, on the whole things went
very well. We are now running "qmail" instead of "sendmail" -- this gives
us a platform to bring new features to your mailbox accounts over the
coming months.
- Aug 15, 2002: change of mail software on shell server.
- We'll be making a change to the mail softare on the shell server on our
about August 19, 2002. Here's the
text of the original announcement.
Shell users are encouraged to monitor the mv.forum.shell newsgroup for
details.
- June 21, 2002: MV goes up to 11
- Today is our 11th anniversary: we incorporated as an ISP
in NH on June 21, 1991.
- Feb 7, 2002: ClariNet coverage of 2002 winter Olympics
- Some of the clari.hot.* newsgroups will be used to carry
2002 Winter Olympics coverage. You can access these newsgroups
directly on our news server (news.mv.net) or read the articles
on our web page (go to www.mv.com,
and see the ClariNet entries in the "For Users Only" pulldown.)
On our web page, the
ClariNet newsgroup list
has been updated to reflect this usage of the clari.hot.* groups.
Winter Olympics coverage in the clari.hot.* groups will be
as follows:
- clari.hot.a -- Alpine Skiing, including Downhill, Slalom, Giant
Slalom, Super-G, and Combined.
- clari.hot.b -- Nordic/Freestyle Skiing and Biathlon, including
Aerials, Moguls, Individual Combined, Team Combined, Sprint,
Jumping, and Cross Country.
- clari.hot.c -- Snow Boarding, including Giant Slalom, and Halfpipe.
- clari.hot.d -- Bobsled, Luge, Skeleton.
- clari.hot.e -- Speed Skating, including both track sizes and
all event lengths.
- clari.hot.f -- Figure Skating , including individuals, pairs,
and dance competitions
- clari.hot.g -- Curling
- clari.hot.h -- Ice Hockey
- Feb 3, 2002: C+W circuit decomissioned.
- The T1 to Cable and Wireless has been turned down as planned.
Our backbone connections are now entirely DS3-based. Reminder:
our backbone connections are described in the
About MV area on our website.
- January 20, 2002: UUNet circuit decomissioned.
- We've turned down the T1 to UUNet; you may notice some packets
taking different routes now. In general this should provide you
with better performance since more traffic will be carried on the
T3 connections at much higher speeds. The remaining
T1 connection (to C+W) will be decomissioned on February 2.
- December 21, 2001: More Genuity bandwidth
- We've increased the bandwidth on the Genuity DS3, adding
3Mbps. This is partly in anticipation of turning down the
UUnet and C+W circuits in early 2002.
- November 15, 2001: Genuity DS3 up.
- The new DS3 to Genuity in Boston
is now up, providing us a great deal of additional bandwidth
to the Internet. (Our backbone connections are described
in the "About MV" area.)
We will be adjusting the balance between our backbone connections
to take the new one into account.
- October 12, 2001: DSL/V now available in Durham, NH,
to qualified locations.
- October 10, 2001: DSL/V now available in Somersworth, NH,
to qualified locations.
- Sep 18, 2001: DSL/V now available in Bedford and Keene, NH,
subject to the normal criteria involved in providing DSL/V service.
- Sep 14, 2001: DSL/V now available in Claremont, NH.
- Our DSL/V service is now available in Claremont, NH,
subject to distance limitations and other factors involved
in providing DSL/V service.
- June 21, 2001: our tenth Anniversary
- On June 21, 1991, MV Communications, Inc. incorporated in
the state of New Hampshire to provide ISP services. ("ISP" wasn't
even a term at the time.) Thanks to all of our customers, long time
and new, and even those who have moved away, for seeing us through
these ten years.
- March 5, 2001: Storm information
- With a heavy winter storm on the way, you may experience
modem contention and Internet slowdowns as demand increases.
Please see our Storm Notes page
for some information and requests from MV to you,
and pointers to some weather sites.
- March 29 2000: Infospeed/DSL trial participants wanted.
- Note: this notice is no longer in effect. It is here
for archival purposes only. Please do not follow up on this.
We're still looking for a few more participants in a trial
of Infospeed residential DSL. We've gotten quite a few respondants
from the Manchester/Nashua area, but would really like more participants
from some of the other towns (for example, Laconia, Portsmouth, Salem,
and a dozen or so others).
See the trial notice for more info.
(Note: the notice was originally only published on the mv.forum.general
Usenet newsgroup.)
- Feb 11 2000: Single Number Service is available!
- The Single Number Service we've been talking about is now ready
for testing! This gives you a Bell Atlantic number that will reach
us throughout the state. Find out more .
- Feb 9 2000, Single Number Service
- The trial of our statewide Single Number Service from Bell Atlantic
is nearly ready - this will give you another statewide number to
dial us, letting you choose the kind of access to us that works the
best for you. Watch this space, it should be turned up shortly.
- Feb 7 2000, new bandwidth
- Our new Cable and Wireless circuit is in and up and running,
giving us more bandwidth to the Internet as well as more diverse
routing. You should see the improvements from the additional bandwidth
immediately, but we will be tweaking our routing parameters over time
to balance the load across our multiple backbone connections in an
optimal way.
- Jan 6 2000, Dover & Litchfield numbers
- Our Dover and Litchfield analog modem dialin pools are finally
being cancelled (we say "finally" because several newsletters ago we
projected that they'd go away some months ago). This means that the
424-7428 and 740-9152 analog numbers will be disappearing effective
January 6, plus whatever delay is added for Bell Atlantic to process
the disconnection. Also going away will be the telebit modem UUCP modem
pool in Litchfield. These analog pools are being phased out in favor
of the digital access numbers that have been in place for the last
20 months or so.
- Jan 3 2000, additional backbone bandwidth planned
- Late last fall we ordered new backbone bandwidth via Cable and
Wireless. Expected due date is January 12. This new bandwidth will
add to our existing backbone connections, giving us even more capacity
and greater routing diversity.
- Jan 1 2000
- We've passed into the year 2000 and the world has
not yet en
- Nov 26: New shell server coming on Dec 13
- For shell account holders: we will be switching to a new shell server
system on December 13. You are invited to test the new shell server from now
until then. See details.
- Nov 8, New bandwidth
- Our long-awaited new backbone connection via UUNet is finally
in place. This adds some routing diversity and should help us continue
to provide responsive Internet access.
- Year 2000 -- Last updated Nov 17, 1999
- y2k info (link moved here from the main userinfo page)
- Try new dialin numbers (Aug 1999 thru (at least) end of Sep 1999)
- For a short while, at least, we are evaluating some alternate remote
access server equipment that provides a different kind of modem hardware for
you to dial into. The purpose of this trial is to see if having a choice of
access equipment hardware here will be a positive thing given the variety of
customer modems in use.
Read more about the trial here.
- Holiday weekend May 29 - May 31 1999
- MV Customer Support will be closed for the extended weekend.
We hope you get to enjoy the beginning of summer- looks like nice
weekend weather coming.
- Decomissioning of some POPs
- Per our plans as of a year ago mentioned in newsletters and
various other places, some of our original analog POPs are at long
last scheduled to be decomissioned. This process was begun in
the spring of 1998 when we began on a large-scale conversion of most
of our dialin access to digital service offering normal modem access,
V.90, and ISDN. As we've mentioned, we kept some of these original
POPs in service much longer than we originally intended, but it's
time to bid some of them farewell. Slated for decomissioning are
the Peterborough, Salem, Nashua, and Concord analog services (note
that in Concord and Nashua we have added extra Bell Atlantic PRI service
in addition to the BNH numbers that also serve these areas). Check
the access numbers page for specific
decomissioning dates and for the PRI access numbers that should be
used instead.
- After April 26... move of Nashua POP
- After next Monday (April 26) we'll be making some changes in our Nashua
POP.
NOTE: Originally scheduled April 26, this work was not
done on that date due to a mixup within Bell Atlantic. We'll let you know
the date as soon as we get it from BA.
Next NOTE: Rescheduled for May 20 at 6AM. Site went down
at 6:30 and move was completed and site back up at 8:25.
These upcoming changes were announced in our last newsletter, and
now we've got a specific date and more details. Several things will
be happening. Note that this only affects our Nashua POP which has
Bell Atlantic numbers -- this does not refer to our BNH numbers at all.
- The POP is being relocated. We're moving down a few floors in the
same building. This means that the POP will be completely unavailable
while this move is happening. We'll post more on the specific schedule
when we have it from Bell Atlantic.
- The remaining analog service in this POP is being terminated. In our
Nashua POP we have a mix of normal analog dialup modems (on the 886-6688
number) and digital modems (on the 886-7124 number). Only the digital
modems support V.90 and ISDN. As we are trying to migrate to primarily
digital service, it makes little sense for us to relocate all the analog
modems so (as we mentioned in the newsletter), we will be terminating the
analog service and increasing the number of digital modems available to
compensate. Bell Atlantic says that they will map the old number (886-6688)
to the digital trunk group, so if that goes right you won't have to change
the number you dial. That's always a big "if" though, so be prepared to change
to using 886-7124 if 886-6688 isn't available by the end of the day.
- April 19 1999: New Concord access
- We are installing a new Bell Atlantic digital access
number in Concord, supporting V.90, ISDN, and modem calls. The number
should be in service in a day or two, and will be 227-2100. This number
will replace the existing Concord Bell Atlantic service (228-7181).
This number is being installed because we recognize that callers from
many towns surrounding Concord served by independent telphone companies can
not call our normal Concord BNH number (supporting V.90/ISDN) without a toll
call, but they can call Bell Atlantic Concord numbers. It's for this reason
that we've kept our older Concord Bell Atlantic POP beefed up. However,
that number could not provide digital service necessary to give V.90 and
ISDN support, so we have installed new service with a new number.
Status April 23: This number is now in service. Note that
IP users will need to have a dynamic IP assignment OR a static IP in the
BNH pool to use this number. If you have a static IP address tied to
Concord, you'll need to change (call us).
- March 18 1999, Clarinet
- We are pleased to say that ClariNet is not being
discontinued after all. Go here for an
update.
- March 16 1999: ClariNet being discontinued.
- As of April 1 we will be cancelling our ClariNet
news service. Go here to find out
more or if you have feedback.
- Feb 19 1999: PUC investigation into PSTN congestion in NH
-
Yesterday (Feb 18) we and many other NH ISPs were notified of an Order of
Notice regarding an investigation into telephone congestion in New
Hampshire, specifically relating to Internet traffic both on consumer side
and on the ISP side. Although we can't predict how or how much, this
investigation has the potential of impacting you and NH ISPs. If you are
interested, please consider looking into the following:
- Feb 11 1999: GTEi/BBNPlanet link is back
-
Our BBNPlanet link is at long last back up and running, as of about 5pm
today (Thursday Feb 11). We'll be doing some tweaking to balance the load
between it and our other circuits, but it's in place and carrying traffic
now.
- December 31 1998: pm3s upgraded
-
Last evening Livingston released a new version of the operating system
for the pm3s that we use for our digital lines (supporting V.90, ISDN,
and normal modem calls). We've upgraded all of our pm3s with this new
OS -- meaning that the bnh numbers plus the Nashua Bell Atlantic
V.90 number have been upgraded. Much of the work on the new OS was in
the modem firmware; several improvements and bug fixes are mentioned.
- December 17 1998: call forwarding numbers going away
-
We have two numbers, 645-6387 and 888-6387, which are call-forwarding
numbers going to Litchfield. We set these numbers up way back in the
distant past, before we had POPs in Nashua and Manchester, so that people in
and around Nashua and Manchester could call a local number and reach
Litchfield. We've encouraged people for a long time to stop using these
numbers: there's no need, and you will get better results if you do NOT
use them. As of this date we are cancelling these numbers: they will
stop working as soon as the order is processed by Bell Atlantic. If
you are using one of these numbers, please arrange to call one of our
other numbers instead (if you have a static IP tied to Litchfield, you
may have to convert to a dynamic IP or a static IP tied to a different
location, contact us if you have trouble using another number).
- October 1998: new connectivity plans
- In early October we placed an order for new, additional Internet
connectivity via GTE/BBNPlanet. This will add more Internet bandwidth
as well as more variety in the way we reach various Internet destinations,
plus better fallover in the event of outages on any one of our external
links. This new connection is due mid-to-late November. At the same time
we placed an order for additional internal bandwidth between our Nashua
and Manchester locations.
Update 19981214: This new link was up and running for about
a week; however GTEi's plans for upgrading their Nashua/Boston link
has not yet been completed, and they asked to turn the link down until
they could complete it or otherwise resolve the capacity issues, the goal
being to protect their current customers. (This is a good thing.) We
expect it to be back up by the end of this year.
Status Dec 29: GTEi now projects January 19 as the new
re-enable date.
- Oct 2 1998: Keene access
- As of today we have decommissioned the 352-6728 number in Keene, in
favor of the Brooks number 338-NETS. This is a process that had begun last
May; we had scaled down the 352-6728 hunt group over the months, contacted
users still using that number to let them know to move to the Brooks number,
and today have removed the remaining lines in that hunt group.
- New production release of V.90 code
- Sep 26, 1998: Hot on the heels of the official ratification of
the V.90 standard, Livingston has removed their new V.90 code from
beta and made a new official release. We are now running this
code on all of our access servers that support the K56/V.90 numbers.
- New access numbers on line
- Aug 27, 1998: Four new dialup numbers have come online:
Colebrook (613-6387), Jefferson (390-6387),
Lancaster (503-6387), and Milan (317-6387). These numbers are
available for shell, IP, and UUCP access (IP users must either have
a dynamically assigned IP address or a static address in the "BNH"
area). As always, check with your telephone company to find out whether
these are local numbers for you.
- New V.90 beta code running on all K56 numbers
- Aug 7 1998: A new beta release of the server code for pm3s has
been released by Livingston, and we are running this release on all
of the K56 numbers (Brooks and Bell Atlantic). This code has improved
support for V.34 and V.90 protocols (including support for more
Rockwell-based modems), plus a fix for the problem that caused us to
remove the previous release from the Nashua number.
- V.90 beta withdrawn from Nashua number
- July 28, 1998: due to a bug that recently began affecting this
number, we have withdrawn the beta code from the Nashua Bell Atlantic
K56 number (886-7124). This number is now running the last production
code, which support K56flex and normal modem protocols, but not V.90.
- V.90 testing on all K56 numbers
- June 25: The new code (see below) looks good; we've deployed
it on all of our K56 numbers. This V.90 code is compatible with
modems that use 3COM (USR) or the Lucent chipsets, but is not
compatible with V.90 protocols on modems using the Rockwell chipsets.
- V.90 testing in Nashua
- June 24: Livingston has released an open beta release of its
server code with many previous beta problems resolved. We are trying
this release on the Nashua K56 number (886-7124) in order to test the
V.90 code and improvements in the V.34 handling. If there are no
major problems we will also run it on BNH numbers.
- New Capacity, New Exchanges
- May 7 and 20, 1998: We have added many new exchanges throughout New
Hampshire and much additional dialin capacity via Brooks Fiber. The new
numbers support normal calls, ISDN, K56flex (and V.90 when it becomes
available). With this new capacity, we will be rapidly reducing the number
of old analog modems that we have in all of our POPs. Thus, we urge you to
convert to the new Brooks numbers as soon as you can (after you investigate
with your telephone company about what numbers you can call locally, or what
charges you will incur - MV does not make any representations about
telephone company charges).
- New Dover K56flex number
- April 22, 1998: The Dover K56flex number is changing due to an
early conversion to a Brooks access number in Dover. See the
Dover entry on
the access page for a pointer to more information.
- Plans for new dialup access
- April 3, 1998: A couple of weeks ago we reached agreements with
Brooks Fiber to provide us with significant new coverage. See
the access page for a pointer to more information.
- New Nashua lines
- April 3, 1998: The new Nashua PRI that's been on order for a long time
from Bell Atlantic is finally just about in. The physical installation has
been completed; BA expects to turn it up on Monday (April 6).
- Concord and Manchester K56flex lines
- Concord and Manchester K56flex access are now up as of
March 13, 1998; for more info
check the mv.forum.general newsgroup and the
list of access numbers.
- K56flex status
- Just a note that the best places to check for status on K56flex
deployment are the mv.forum.general newsgroup and the
list of access numbers.
- New news server
- The new usenet news server is officially up as of Dec 30, 1997.
It has been running in test mode for over a month now. See the posting(s)
in mv.forum.dialip for more info.
- Dover K56flex
- Dover K56flex line is up as of December 16, 1997.
See the
list of access numbers for calling info.
- Dover K56flex access status as of Dec 9 1997
- Our equipment is (still) in place waiting for the access
link to be turned up. Bell Atlantic installed the physical
cable last Friday (Dec 5) and expects to have the line up
and running by Wednesday, December 17 - hopefully sooner.
The number is listed in our
list of access numbers.
- Dec 9, New news server in test mode
- As mentioned in our recent newsletters, we're working on
installing a new usenet news server. (If you read usenet news, you
have probably already seen some discussion of this already.) The new
news server has been up and running in test mode for the last couple
of weeks and we expect to put it into production service within the
next 10-14 days. When this happens, you will find that the article
numbers are slightly different than they are on the server you are
currently accessing. We regret that this will cause some minor
aggravation as you move to the new server, but moving to a higher
capacity, more robust news server should make it worth it.
If you wish to access the new server ahead of time, while it is
in test mode, point your newsreader to news-test.mv.net (a name
that will cease to work when the server goes into production).
Further details and announcements on this subject will be posted
to the mv.forum.* newsgroups (mv.forum.general, mv.forum.dialip,
and mv.forum.shell).
- Nashua K56flex/ISDN access is up, November 13 1997.
- Bell Atlantic brought the link up at about 17:15 today.
See the
list of access numbers for the phone
number.
Update Nov 24: When this link was first brought up,
callers from within Nashua were not able to connect at K56flex
rates, whereas callers from other local exchanges were able to
get the extended rates. Bell Atlantic changed a trunk group
parameter on Friday (Nov 21), fixing the problem.
- Nashua 56Kb status November 12 1997
- Looks like we have to wait another day before this service
comes online. The line was installed today per schedule, however
Bell Atlantic's translation department did not get done with making
it come alive. We're told it should be ready in the morning
(November 13).
- Dover 56Kb status November 7 1997
- Bell Atlantic informed us today that they do not have the
facilities in Dover to install our PRI circuit (or any PRI
circuits), and that they don't expect to have these facilities
until next March. It is likely that we will be able to have
them install channelized T1 service for now, which will still
provide K56flex dialins but will NOT be able to support ISDN
calls. They will be letting us know the status of this install next
week; if positive, then the delay in this new service will be as much
as two weeks.
Update Nov 11: BA indicates that the earliest install for
this service will be December 7.
- 56Kb news
- We now have an install date of November 11 for 56Kb access
in Nashua and Dover; the install could conceivably occur before
that time, telco willing. The access will be via a separate
number in each location, that number will support K56flex and ISDN
access.
- Newsletter typo in Sep 1997
-
There is an error in the printed newsletter that was mailed out with
the bills and to other recipients. A portion of the newsletter reads:
- We will be replacing our mail server in October. The new system is
already in house and is being configured; our mail server requires a lot of
customer software changes and we need to get them all squared away before
the new system is put into place.
The word "customer" should have been "custom" -- i.e., we have to
make modifications to the server software before bringing it
online. With the typo, there's a suggestion that YOU have to make
software changes, which is not the case.
- Litchfield lines removed Sep 10 1997
- As we have been moving quite a few users from Litchfield to
the new(ish) Manchester and Nashua POPs, we've found that we can
remove some modems from Litchfield. The last 10 numbers of the
Litchfield hunt group
(429-0457, 429-0459, 429-0850, 429-0854, 429-0917, 429-0954,
429-0970, 429-0972, 429-1340, 429-4063)
will be decommissioned on September 10. If you are dialing
any of these numbers directly, refer to the
list of access numbers for others.
Note: Originally scheduled Sep 3, NYNEX pushed it back
a week.
- New Nashua lines Aug 21 1997
- New dialin lines have been added in Nashua as well as an
experimental ISDN hunt group. As always, see the
access numbers for specifics.

We're moving, June 16th
- MV's staff and servers are moving from Litchfield to Manchester
during the wee hours of June 16th. Please read about it..
- Update on MCI link
- May 7, 1997. As you probably know, in January we placed an order with
MCI for another T1 link into the Internet. This circuit has still not been
turned up. While we are waiting, we decided to take the rather dramatic
step of purchasing some additional connectivity from a neighboring ISP
(Destek, to whom we already had a direct wire connection for exchange of
local traffic). This is in place now, and we expect it to last until such
time as our MCI link comes up or until we settle on another option (we have
begun taking quotes from alternate providers again).
There may be some variations in the routing over the next few
days as we change the way we do routing with Sprintlink, and as
we tweak the configurations.
- Nashua lines
- Nashua has been seeing high activity of late (thanks!).
New lines are due to be installed in the Nashua node on May 8.
- Connection rate survey
- MV Users: please take a few minutes to give us some feedback
about your modem connection rates. We're collecting your input-
good and bad reports are equally important.
- Manchester POP up!
- As of Monday afternoon, April 21, the new Manchester POP
is up and running. You can access it at 645-4986.
IP users: if you have a static IP address that is tied to Litchfield
(or any other location, e.g. Concord or Salem), you will need to
convert your account so that the IP address is either dynamically
assigned (preferable) or statically tied to Manchester (not so
preferable). You can do so by emailing to mv-admin@mv.mv.com or
by calling us (629-0000).
- Peterborough lines
- April 4: New lines in Peterborough have been installed and
are up and operational.
- New Keene lines
- New Keene lines were installed April 2 and all of them are up and
running as of the morning of April 4.
- Web page (www.mv.com) reorganized
- Nothing earth-shattering, but a reorganization of the information
on our web page was put into place on March 21, 1997. Some stuff has moved,
but overall we think it will be easier to navigate.
- Dover expanded, moved, and open
- As of March 20, 1997, the Dover site is moved to its new
location, new lines have been installed, and it's back open for
new subscribers.
- Keene and Peterborough expansion
- The addition of lines in Keene and Peterborough that was supposed
to have occured in early March are both still on hold as NYNEX tries to find
facilities. Both of these installs were "go" right up until the
last minute, in fact in Peterborough the technician actually showed
up to do the install but ended up leaving because his pairs had not
been properly allocated.

- The Nashua node is now up!
- As of January 11, 1997, the new Nashua node is up and available
for use at 886-6688.
Shell users and IP users with dynamic IP addresses should be able to
use this node without any changes (except for the phone number). If
you have a static IP address for Litchfield or Salem, you'll need to
contact us to have it changed if you want to call this new Nashua
number (if you change to a dynamic IP address it'll let you have a
choice of any of our dialin areas).
The Nashua number will be best for you if you are dialing from a
Nashua exchange or from an exchange (such as Hollis) that is not
local to another of our numbers. If you're calling from any other
location then there is probably no reason for you to call Nashua, but
you can continue dialing Litchfield.
The call-forwarding number (888-6387) will continue to work for
the time being.
