MV Usenet News Server

MV Usenet News Server

Usenet News is a global bulletin board system with thousands of discussion areas known as newsgroups, which are organized by hierarchy and by subject matter. We have operated a Usenet server under the mv.com domain since late 1987. Since we provide Usenet news on our server, you have rapid local access to this vast communications medium.

In addition to normal Usenet discussion content, we also subscribe to the ClariNet News Service, providing you with profession content similar to a newspaper, incorporating world and local news, entertainment, sports, business, technical information, and so forth. This content is available in the clari.* news hierachy. We also make it available on our web server in the ClariNews area. Note that ClariNet news is a professional service that we pay for, and ClariNews material is copyrighted and we make it available only to MV users. (See our Usage Policies for terms of service.)

Our Usenet News server is well connected, with many incoming and outgoing feeds as described below. While we make sure to have a good number of full feeds, we also make sure to have a number of partial feeds in order to help quickly inject local articles into different places in the global Usenet. We also peer with many local providers in order to help speed the flow of local Usenet conversations. And we receive a good portion of our news via satellite, so as not to overburden our Internet backbone connections.

Our Usenet Newsgroup Finder (updated nightly) can help you find your way through the newsgroups that we offer. Note that we do not by default add every "I can create a newsgroup too" group that is created: some servers claim many tens of thousands of newsgroups, but most of that claim is as empty as the bogus newsgroups that make up that count. However we do monitor our incoming streams for active groups that that we need to add, and we will add most newsgroups on your request. (The notable exceptions are so-called "warez" groups and groups dealing with pedophilia.)
