Notes:

Storage space used beyond the base amount will be charged at $0.10(10¢)/MB/month (for reasonable overages this is usually waived);
Bandwidth used beyond the base amount will be charged at a rate of $3/GB/month (for reasonable overages this is usually waived);
For any active IP, Shell, or DSL account with MV, you will receive a $5/month discount on a name-based exclusive server within the same billing account ($10 discount for IP-based exclusive server).

Standalone Web Service

Exclusive

An exclusive web service provides you with your own virtual server. This gives your web space its own IP address, ensuring that even older browsers browsers will work with it. An exclusive server will typically have a URL of http://www.your_domain.com. (If you do not have a domain, MV can assist in registering a domain name for you -- note that additional fees to Internet registration authorities will also apply.)

A "name-based" exclusive server does not have its own individual IP address, but is recognized by the domain name that the client's web browser sends to our server. All modern web browsers operate this way-- the only browsers that don't send the full domain name are very old.

An "IP-based" exclusive server also has a unique IP address associated with that web server. This may be required to support some very old web browsers that don't send the domain name to the server as part of the request. You may also require this for unique positioning within search engines, for special access requirements, or for other reasons.

Web Pages Included with Dialup Accounts

Standard

Standard level web space is included with a dialup IP account, a UNIX Shell account, or a DSL "always-on" account at MV Communications.

Note the different resource allocations for pages associated with active vs dormant accounts. A dialup account is considered active if it has any usage within a month, and is charged at the full monthly rate. It is considered dormant if no usage occurred during the month, and is charged at a reduced "dormant" rate, with lower base allotments for web usage.

Additional Standard Pages

If you need more than the personal web page that is provided with your dialup account, you can purchase additional standard web pages. These are available in either the www.mv.com/org tree (for organizations, clubs, etc) or in www.mv.com/biz for other business affiliations. Additional standard pages are only available to MV customers who already qualify for standard web pages, and may not be purchased by themselves.

Server Alias

A server alias is a domain name that is mapped into a web page without the use of its own IP address. This is usable with modern web browsers that send the entire URL as part of the request. (Some very old browsers do not do this, instead sending only the path portion of the URL, but those older browsers are in very rare use now.)

For example, you may have a page at http://www.mv.com/ipusers/myaccount, but you could add a server alias for http://www.example.com/. When a web user accessed the location http://www.example.com/, they would then end up going to the underlying page specified by the alias mapping (e.g., they would go to http://www.mv.com/ipusers/myaccount).

You can also have an alias within the mv.com domain: for example, the alias http://www.mocv.mv.com/ maps to http://www.mv.com/users/mem/ .

NOTE: You must have web space on MV to use a web alias, and the charges for this alias are in addition to the base rates of your current page.

Calculation of Extra Usage

Extra storage and bandwidth is calculated and priced to the nearest penny.

Content

We host web pages to further the spread of information, whether it be for commercial, organization, or personal purposes. Use web space positively and productively, but always with a mind to good netiquette. There are unacceptable uses of web pages, and these include (but are not limited to):

Any illegal purpose
Any connection to newsgroup SPAMs or abusive off-topic postings to usenet, from any source.
Any connection to unsolicited email, from any source.

Facilities

MV provides certain facilities for development of web pages, including access counters (no need to rely on counters on some external site), an icon library, and tools to process user input via HTML forms on your web pages. You may also choose to have your page included in a list or index of customer pages. You can also make use of our switch documents to automatically direct clients to different versions of your web pages depending on the client or the client's capabilities (or even the time of day).
