MV Communications: UUCP accounts

What is a UUCP account?

A UUCP account lets you connect your computer, rather than yourself, to the Internet, and is only useful for exchanging electronic mail. You can maintain electronic mail software on your own computer, or on your own network. Periodically, your computer system dials MV and remains connected only for the time necessary to send and receive any mail that needs to be exchanged between your site and the Internet.

With UUCP, you need only one account with MV to access electronic mail. You can set up as many mailboxes and user accounts on your system as you wish; it is completely under your control. You manage your own mailboxes and mail software. A UUCP account is a popular choice for some businesses and organizations who already have UUCP networking installed, or have UUCP networking experience. If you need access to other Internet tools such as the Web, an IP account or Unix Shell account is probably for you.

A UUCP account does not give you real-time access to the Internet, but does give you reliable and fast electronic mail.

To use a UUCP account you need a modem and software on your computer system or computer network to communicate to MV using the UUCP protocol, as well as compatible software to maintain your electronic mail.

Usenet: We are no longer offering Usenet news feeds via UUCP. The demand simply isn't enough to warrant our maintaining the news/uucp gateway software, and the volume and nature of Usenet news has increased to where it is pointless to continue to run feeds over dialup connections.

Discounts: You may be eligible for one of our discounts for a UUCP account.
