DSL/V Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)

MV's DSL/V DSL service is delivered to your location over an ordinary telephone line. You must have a DSL modem to provide the proper signalling on this line. This DSL modem makes the DSL line appear to act just like an ethernet link between your location and MV Communications's equipment. Some DSL modems are standalone "external" units that require a data connection to your computer (usually via ethernet), and some are "internal" (a card that mounts inside your computer and acts like an ethernet card).

The external units offer the most flexibility and reliability, but do require that you have the appropriate interface to connect them to your computer or your network. The simplest is the kind that provides an ethernet port: you merely need have an ethernet interface in your computer, and use an ethernet connection to the external DSL modem. Some external modems provide another kind of interface (e.g. USB).

In addition to a DSL modem, you will need one or more "microfilter" units -- this is because the DSL/V service uses a telephone line that is also used for voice. You must plug a microfilter into every jack that has a voice telephone unit; the microfilter plugs into the jack, and your telephone unit plugs into the microfilter. This helps to isolate unusual spikes (e.g. caused by picking up or hanging up the phone) from the DSL data on the line. MV offers the following equipment for use with DSL/V:

There are other units out there that are compatible, and we may test them on occasion. MV's DSL/V service uses a DMT DSL protocol, you may (at your own risk) be able to find other DMT-based modems that work with this service.
