Dialing MV's ISDN numbers

NB: MV makes no representation about your telephone charges when using ISDN or any other service. To investigate access charges, contact your telephone company. We provide these notes as a starting point in your investigation.

Be aware of the ISDN tarrifs affecting your charges. For example, in New Hampshire circuit switched data calls (64000 bps) are subject to a per-minute charge even if the call is within your local dialing area. You can make "data over voice" (DOV) ISDN calls at 56000 bps which are subject to the same local dialing charges as other calls within your residence (i.e. if your normal local calls are unmeasured, your DOV calls will be also). Other states may treat ISDN calls differently.

In a scenerio such as that, most ISDN users will choose to have unmeasured service and make data over voice (DOV) ISDN calls. To do this, your ISDN modem or device must be configured to originate the DOV calls. On our primary numbers, MV's equipment will answer the call in whatever method you have selected. In other words, you are responsible for originating the call as a data-over-voice call vs a circuit switched data call. Be careful that you do not misconfigure your modem to originate data calls when you don't mean to.

Also be wary of other extra costs associated in an ISDN lines. Some of these extra costs can include:

SLC charges
If you live very far away from the telephone company's switch, your telephone is probably not directly connected into your local central office. Many rural and outlying areas are served by "SLC" (Subscriber Line Carrier) units. These are the little green boxes that you see by the side of the road, often with telephone company people working on them. Basically a SLC is connected via a high-speed line to the central office, and your telephone line is connected to the SLC.

If you are served out of a SLC, the telephone company may charge you an extra installation fee for your ISDN line, as well as an extra monthly fee.

Virtual ISDN
You may live in a town where the central office doesn't normally support ISDN. However, you may still be able to get ISDN service by having it "virtually" supported out of a neighboring office. If you get ISDN service this way, you'll have an extra installation fee and extra monthly fees.
