Issues involving verification of BNH access numbers

We've urged you to verify with your telephone company any access charges (or lack thereof) that you will incur by calling one of the BNH numbers -- and you wouldn't be here if you hadn't paid attention. We are obligated to repeat: MV makes no representation concerning telephone company charges.

While we are not an authority on telco charges, we can provide some hints and issues that you can use when talking to your telephone company. For example, our list of exchanges is one such hint: we would expect you to check in the phone book or with your telephone company to follow up on this hint.

Problems verifying local access or access charges

As of May 1998, all of the BNH access numbers are very new. When you call your Bell Atlantic operator to ask about what charges you will incur when dialing one of these numbers, the operator may not recognize the exchange (the NXX -- the first three digits of the 7-digit number). When this happens, they will tell you that it's a toll call.

You might ask them if they know for certain-- i.e. if they've actually found the NXX listing or if they are just assuming it's a toll call because they can't find it.

In theory, all of the new NXXs are in a rate database called the LERG (pronounced like it is spelled, lerg). You might mention this fact to the operator and ask if they can verify it via the LERG.

If you still can not get an answer out of the Bell Atlantic operator, try calling Brooks. They are at 263-1000, a Manchester number (which itself might be a toll call). Considering that this advise may change -- i.e., we may get a better number from Brooks than this, or it may be found to be inappropriate -- please refresh this document before calling this number, just to make sure that this is still an option that we mention.

Customers of Independent Telephone Companies

If you are customer of an Independent telephone company in New Hampshire, you CAN NOT call one of the Brooks numbers as a local call, even if a call to the equivalent Bell Atlantic number is local to you. We know of the following independent telephone companies and the exchanges they serve. i.e., if your phone number has one of these exchanges, and your telephone bill doesn't come from Bell Atlantic, this applies to you. Reminder: this is provided as a hint, as a guideline-- verify it for yourself.
