[ Printed on MV letterhead and sent via US Mail ] Rep. John E. Sununu Feb 28, 2002 On behalf of MV Communications, Inc., an ISP located in Manchester, NH and serving individuals and businesses throughout New Hampshire, I would like to congratulate and thank you for your vote yesterday opposing HR1542, the so-called "Tauzin/Dingell" bill. While HR1542 was touted by its proponents as an "Internet Freedom Act" designed to bring competition to the broadband Internet industry, it was anything but. Its contents would severely cripple the competitive provisions of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and limit oversight by state and federal regulatory agencies. Further, it would cede a virtual monopoly to the regional Bell operating companies for the future DSL marketplace. The Bell companies were granted a caretaker position over the public telephone system, for which they were given guaranteed profits. While that makes economic and policy sense, it does not make sense for that public trust to be turned into a monopoly position in other areas. The Internet flourished because independent ISPs such as ours were able to build our businesses using telecom facilities purchased at retail or wholesale. At a furious pace, competing ISPs tried different technologies, introduced different pricing models and services, and brought the Internet to the public. That public will not be served by a return to the old days of waiting for the Bell companies to offer at most a single technology, a single set of services, and a single pricing model. The Internet promises to be a place where small businesses and individuals can have great roles. Thank you for supporting this future by your vote against monopolization of the Internet. Mark E.
