Gathering for quiet reflection is central to life at The Meeting School. For some, this is a time to commune with the Spirit; for others it is centering, a time for meditation, thinking, appreciation, slowing down. As in all Quaker gatherings, there is an invitation to speak out of the silence. This can be a time when important thoughts and feelings are shared, or simply a time when we sit together in comfortable, trusting silence.
We gather each morning for Opening, which begins with some rowdy group singing, then settles into about 10-15 minutes of collective quiet. Attendance and announcements for the day follow.
On Wednesday evenings, after our Community Meeting in the afternoon, we gather for a longer worship time, beginning with about a half an hour of joyous song, with another half an hour to 45 minutes of quiet to follow. This worship time is under the care of Ministry and Counsel Committee, a join student and faculty committee that has care of the spiritual well-being of the school community. Some weeks the committee plans special programs, including events like "noise worship," Appreciations, or a suggested sharing theme. Other weeks the worship period flows as we are collectively led.
