Quite frankly, I had a feeling after the first month or so during this poll that this could be the last. At the time, I only had between 60 and 70 poll responses - which was well below my expectations given the number of folks on-line that knew about the poll and the number of hits to the Brucelegs web pages. I had even created the on-line poll submission forms to make it as easy as possible to submit poll responses. I just couldn't understand why, given the hits to the poll results section of the Brucelegs site, it seemed like more folks would much rather sit back and read the poll results instead of participating in them.
For me to make this poll a success, I had to start a campaign to actively recruit poll responders via e-mail. I probably sent out over 300 messages - many to past poll responders and then to folks that have supplied me with CD "Bruceleg" track lists or have otherwise corresponded with me regard CDs. This was not without precedence, as I've done this for past polls, but not nearly at this level. Most went unanswered, and I did get a few rude responses, but in the end it seemed worthwhile as a significant number of the folks I asked did contribute to the poll - some in a big way and for which I'm very grateful. If anyone was offended by my efforts, I'm sorry. I just didn't want anyone to think that I just sat here and let the 230 or so poll responses roll in. I had to spend a considerable amount of time lobbying for poll results.
Some of the notes I got back did indicate why I hadn't received a poll response from that person - the list was so large that they just couldn't bring themselves to fill it out. For anyone with a significant number of titles, filling out the poll was a daunting task. But I knew this, which was one of the reasons why the poll was spread out over a 2 months. The smartest folks used the on-line poll submission forms, which broke up the poll list into seven (7) sections - each of which could be completed and sent in individually over a period of time. But there were plenty of folks who said that they were just too busy and couldn't find the time. Given the amount of work I was putting into the poll and the duration of the poll itself, I have little sympathy for such a response.
So, faced with a seemingly critical mass of CD "Bruceleg" titles followed by an increasing amount of apathy towards participation in the polls, it looks like the 1997 poll may be the last poll of it's type. At this point, I'm not sure if there will be any polls in the future. This is too bad, as I've been told by folks on other lists that this was the biggest and most inclusive poll of it's type for any artist that's ever been done.
Some have suggested limiting the polls to just certain CDs, say from one particular tour, at a time. Unfortunately, the prospect of running multiple polls over a period of time to cover all the tours doesn't entice me. What is not generally known is that I've saved every single poll response I have ever received. I still have all the poll responses from both the 1994 and 1995 polls, as well as 1997. This could be the key to future polls, knowing you just need to fill out the large list once and only need to rate the titles you've received since the previous poll. But right now I'm not in the mood to think about future polls.
Enjoy the current results for what they are, a gift from folks who care. And every so often check the number of visitors at the bottom of this page and consider what it would have been like if that was the number of poll responders.
