when i was a girl, if we wanted to hear strong women singing
their own songs, there wasn't a new one every week, like there is now.
there were only laura nyro, carole king, and joni. first i heard judy collins
singing "both sides now", then i heard about the woman who wrote that song.
if there had never been joni, there would not be shawn colvin, sheryl crow,
the indigos, (1998 UPDATE: and paula cole, and sarah mclaughlin,
etc, etc) --
"Blue" is essential naked songmaking, from the ups of
"carey" to the downs of the title song. how many years has it been, and
i still can't get these songs out of my head.
