My Prius’s gas mileage

I want to thank Barrett Silver for permission to copy his way of displaying gas mileage information as a line chart, as well as permission to copy his data descriptions. His website: Barrett’s 2004 Toyota Prius Site.

Data for this chart are here. Estimating the capacity of the gas tank (what’s “empty”?) is here. (From this page are links to various explanations about estimating the capacity of reserve tank, the number of miles traveled after the fuel gauge shows “E”, the number of miles from a tank of gas, and the ideal maximum number of miles from a tank of gas.)

Running average from 0 miles (7/10/08): 46.25 mpg
Running average from 5,300 miles (7/10/08): 46.47 mpg

The bottom line, the green line, about this chart is: Since getting my Toyota Prius, the current running average of the car’s gas mileage is 46.6 mpg.

Displayed Mileage is the mileage that the Prius on-board computer displays based on a mileage reset at each gas tank fill up.

Actual Mileage is the mileage based on the number of miles driven between fill-ups divided by the number of gallons required to fill the tank (miles/gallons).
