2001 CAP Grant Report
(CAP: Conservation Assessment Program)

Extensive reports have been received from Randall Crawford, Architectural Preservationist, and Marc Williams, noted New Hampshire conservator. They examined the building and collection with attention to every detail and found serious problems.

"In order to manage a historic property properly it is necessary to understand and be respectful of the building's historic and architectural significance in the course of ongoing maintenance." We would hope that the Society building and collection would have the great significance to the town that they deserve.

They concurred that, "The most serious concern for damage to the building and collection is associated with uncontrolled roof and ground water. This occurs in a variety of forms causing high levels of Relative Humidity resulting in mold, mildew and fungus problems. This requires immediate attention."

A few volunteers cannot and should not shoulder all the work. The artifacts and archival materials housed at the Hancock Historical Building are the heritage of all the residents, past and present. We need to ask support of all town residents and friends for their help through membership, financial contributions and involvement.
