This Mourning Cloak was very patient with my photography. The guidebook says these unusually long-lived butterflies emerge in late June, hibernate over winter, then mate in April-May. They suck from tree-sap leaks and moisture on soil and gravel; unlike most butterflies, they rarely visit flowers.
