Swan, a Harpette
Updated October 6, 1998
The Swan has only had a few outings to shows and competitions, but she is a hit
wherever she goes. She won a Blue Ribbon at the Antelope Valley Doll Show in
Lancaster CA in March of 1998. She appeared in the Fall issue of Soft Dolls and
Animals in a review of that show, with the statement: "Wendy Trommer's very orginal
Swan Boat won many gasps of delight.." Which, of course, delighted me (even though she
isn't a boat) because the judge wrote: "Colors do not work, try black or white pattern.."
More recently she won first place in the professional
doll, original character division at Craft Adventure as well as Best of Show for the same
category.

Swan is an elegant anthropomorphic creature. In Greek mythology Harpies had the
bodies and talons of birds and heads and torsos of women. They were considered to be
grotesque creatures. Harpettes, on the other hand, have no talons, simply bodies of birds
and heads of beautiful women. For a closer look at her face, click HERE.
The Swan could have performed in Las Vegas or perhaps Lincoln
Center (if she had legs). She is a one of a kind, hand-made Wendys’ Whimseys.
Her body is constructed of a wire frame, which is then wrapped in felted batting and filled
with polyfill and pellets (for weight). Her outer layer is hand appliqued one layer at a
time of satin, lame’, ultra-suede and other unusual materials. The wings' feathers are
individually pieced lame’ prairie points stitched around the wing frame. Her face is
needle-modeled and hand painted with separate eyelashes. She wears a crown of white
feathers around her head and a purple boa around her neck.
While creating this masterpiece, my husband was threatening to call 911 and request men with straight
jackets. Evidently, he believed I had gone over the edge. Size: 16" long, 13" high and
approximately 8" wide.
She is an interesting conversation piece on your coffee or sofa
table. She has won ribbons and awards wherever she has been shown. I warn you though;
she is gold, copper, fuchsia, royal blue and emerald green. I
promise she will get noticed!!
