WOW! How time flies. It's hard to believe that it has been six months since our last update. But that's how it is when there is so much to do!

We are delighted to announce, somewhat belatedly, that Wendy was featured in the June 1999 issue of The Cloth Doll (Volume 13 No. 3). And a pattern for a Pin Pal pin cushion was included in the magazine, too! This is the only pattern of Wendy's work available at the moment, although she is working some patterns that she hopes to have available soon. If you don't subscribe to The Cloth Doll, it's difficult to find in news stands (aren't most Doll Magazines?), but you can get to their web site from our LINKS/ORGANIZATIONS page for more information. It's an excellent magazine for cloth doll lovers.

Although we weren't able to get to the show, we have it on excellent authority that Wendy won three blue ribbons at this years Craft Adventure. You are only allowed to enter three items. And as this event becomes more popular with doll makers, the competition is getting fierce. For a sneak peak at two of the winning entries, click on the thumbnails below. Pretty soon these dolls will appear in the Gallery section with their complete stories. Stay tuned.

Wendy also found time to participate in the "Amazing Treasure Doll Challenge" organized by Pamela Armas who owns "Treasures of the Gypsy". For the price of the entry fee she received a package of goodies to incorporate into her creation. It was a "wonderful collection of treasures", she said and managed to use almost everything she received on her entry entitled:

Seraphina

More information on Seraphina soon.

Patti Culea is hosting an international exhibit called "Real Women of the New Millennium" a Zaftig Doll Challenge. This event will premier at Doll U and travel around the world at various venues until it closes at We Folk of Cloth in October of 2000. We hope to have more information on the schedule to post later as well as a picture of Wendy's entry "April East". April East is Wendy's version of May West in the year 2000, although, many of us who know Wendy, believe it really is a bit of a self portrait.

In other news, Wendy is the current President of The Textile Tarts Doll Club. The Textile Tarts is a doll club based in Massachusetts with membership in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. This club is putting together a Tell Me a Story Challenge, based on the Sew Me a Story Challenge that just finished touring the U.S. this past July.

Club members are making dolls representative of characters in Children's story books. These dolls will travel to member libraries beginning late December. More information on this event and photos of the dolls will soon be posted on the Textile Tarts Web Page WWW.MV.COM/IPUSERS/DOLLS/TEXTARTS/HOME.HTM We hope that you will drop in and see what these very talented doll makers are up to.

Wenham Museum Update

A lot has been happening in our world in since we last updated. The doll created for the Wenham Museum exhibit has been completed (just under the wire, I might add). This doll was a major challenge with lots of problems to solve. Many have asked where the idea came from and I must give credit where it is due, my wonderful husband originated it. But it is still my vision, just ask him. He will tell you that I didn't get it right because it is not what he saw in his mind. If I tell you that it is a "Player Piano" what vision do you see? Check out Player Piano and see how close you came. For more photos and details on this piece you must go to the GALLERY.

The Wenham Museum exhibit "The Cutting Edge: Original Dolls" is open from February 8th to April 12th. Call the Museum at (978)468-2377 for more information and visiting hours. The Wenham is one of the oldest doll museums in the country and have a wonderful collection in addition to this exhibit.

"The Cutting Edge: Original Dolls" features the works of 51 different international doll artists. Artists such as elinor peace bailey, Jackie Casey, Patti Culea, Jane Darin, Maggie Mayer, John Darcy Noble, Dorit Schendzielorz, Nancy Wiley and Gloria Winer to name just a few. There are many more whose names you will recognize. I hope that if you can you will take the opportunity to see this wonderful exhibit.

For myself, I am pleased to tell you that the Player Piano was a featured photograph in both the Boston Globe (Feb 21 North Shore section) and in the Salem Evening News (March 15th edition) articles about "The Cutting Edge" Exhibit.

JIDS (Jekyll Island Doll Seminar) 1999

By now many of you have received your magazines featuring photos from JIDS 98. Although I do not get photo credit, most of the photographs you see were taken by Wendy's Whimseys. As you might have guessed it was a truly memorable event.

Which is why we were delighted to have the opportunity to return to JIDS 1999, which just concluded. Again the classes offered were truly spectacular with both well known teaches (such as Susanna Oroyan, Nancy Walters and the Creagers) and some that may not be as well known yet. But they will be soon.

I hope to have photographs from this event available on line in the next month or so, so stay tuned for more information.

THEY'RE HERE!

To see the photographs of the winners of the 1999 "It's all in the Cards" challenge click on JIDS '99'. Use your browsers back button to return to this page.

The JIDS Doll Challenge was "It's All the Cards". There were many wonderful interpretations on that theme, ranging from greeting cards, credit cards, tarot cards and, of course playing cards. I chose to use playing cards for my interpretation of the theme. It is a multi-dimensional piece called "The Queen of Diamonds steps out with the King of Hearts". Until the pictures come back, I will leave it to your imagination. Just like "Player Piano" I think you will be surprised at what you see.

JIDS 1999 also brought more publicity for us when the Brunswick News came to do a piece on the event. There was, of course, a photographer and the reporter asked to see some of our work. The next thing you know we are in the paper again, this time with Glory! The scrapbook got a lot of pages filled this past month.

WOW 99 (Week of Workshops)

The Visual Arts Academy of Concord is hosting their third annual Week of Workshops (WOW) during the month of MAY in Concord, NH. This is yet another opportunity to take classes on doll making methods and techniques from both internationally known and soon to be, instructors. The cost of these classes are very affordable as VAAC is a non-profit organization founded to promote the visual arts. For more information on this event click on WOW99.

January 10, 1999

Welcome to 1999. At this point in time I am very busy trying to complete my piece for "The Cutting Edge Doll Exhibit" which will be held at the Wenham Museum in Wenham, MA. This exhibit is scheduled to open on Friday February 12th and will run through April 8th 1999. It will feature over 50 doll artists from around the world in all mediums. I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunity to view if you are in the Boston area during that time period.

Also related to the Wenham Museum, I am making small doll pins which will sold in the gift shop. These pins are made from China silk and are somewhat posable. They will sell for $25.00. Hopefully we will have pictures of these items in the very near future and be able to offer the pins for sale from this site.

I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you our plans for 1999. In the next few months we will be adding an order form to the site to make it easier for you to purchase things. Additionally, we will be adding some hard to find supplies and some of our favorite materials. We also plan to be adding patterns for those of you who like to make your own dolls. Anything in particular you would like? E-mail us and let us know.

    Doll Commissions

  • Besides creating several dolls from my own very vivid imagination, I have taken on a few commissioned pieces this year. The first, a 25th wedding anniversary gift a local physician purchased for his wife. For 25 years, they have collected turtles; they have 100's of them in all shapes, sizes and mediums. He requested two TURTLES DANCING . They were well received.

-Thank you Carol Dubek for your wonderful imagination and for sharing your methods.

David K. Small (fiber artist, designer, author, teacher) of Small Expressions, at www.small-expressions.com, asked if I could make a doll for his web site. This particular doll is has multiple accessories such as an easel and pointer (for lectures), a color wheel, pin cushion and fabric packs of his hand painted Artistic Fabrics. To view this doll click on "DAVID"

If you are interested in having a custom doll made for a special occasion, please e-mail me your specifications and I'll be happy to give you a quotation.

  • Hawaiian Cows

In August two girlfriends and I painted a Hawaiian Cow (see Doll Stories for more info on the start of this adventure). This cow was originally a black and white Holstein plywood cutout; you know the kind that goes in the back yard that belonged to my favorite aunt. Last summer I saw that it needed painting and offered to bring it home to do so. My uncle couldn't load it into the truck fast enough (Good Riddance, I'm sure).

It sat in my shed for nearly a year before I arranged for my two cohorts to come for the weekend and have a painting party. We primed the cow in white and drew on the lines for the black spots with Hawaiian Bird of Paradise flowers painted on the black background.

Next I called my aunt and told her that the cow was missing (she believed me and told me not to be upset-it was okay). Then we loaded the cow into my girlfriend's van and sent it home where it was delivered anonymously the next day. Auntie is still trying to figure out how it got there. And how to get it back to my house without me knowing.

As promised the story continues. The entire painting episode was photographed and if you would like to see a photo of the painting crew click your mouse HERE. We will be adding more photos of Leilani, the Hawaiian cow's travels in the coming months. Be sure to check for updates in STORIES too.

  • Soft Dolls & Animals

The Fall issue of Soft Dolls and Animals has pictures of the Antelope Valley Doll Show, which was held in March of this year. I submitted four dolls to this show and all four won blue ribbons; a photo of the Swan is shown on page 51 and in the Gallery on this site.

  • CLASSES
  • If you or your group would be interested in having me visit to discuss doll making and/or teach a class, please e-mail me for further information. Be sure to mention what specifically you are interested in knowing or having me do. I also have a slide show prepared on the evolution of cloth doll making as it applies to my work. Include your snail mail address if you want a copy of my teaching brochure.
