ERZULIE

Erzulie

Photo and story courtesy of Rebecca Kempson

Erzulie was an old Cajun/Creole woman who lived on the back bayous of Louisiana. She possessed such special powers that she could predict the future. Many a young bride paid her a visit before before marrying to find out what forturne the years ahead held. Erzulie asked only one thing in return for her knowledge........a scrap of bright purple cloth. Her wisdom told her that cloth of purple given by someone in love would never fade.

My own grandmother's grandmother was one of those brides and although she and her young husband moved to Alabama, she brought the story with her.

By the time my elderly Maidenlady Aunt passed it to me when I was only eight years old, the story was that Erzulie became so much a part of the backwater swamp that the moss grew in her hair, her hands were as skinny as branches, and her face the dark brown of cypress bark. But her dress, even though it was in shreds was still bright with the purple colored cloth given in love.

I might also add that my Aunt was renown for her quilting ability, and was declared by the State of Alabama to be a State Treasure. If you look closely at any of her quilts, there is always a small piece of purple worked with love into the design.

And that is the Story of Erzulie La Sierrene.

This doll was created by Rebecca Kempson and her story is true. If you would like to contact Rebecca, you may email her at BBKempson@msn.com.
