In May of 1997, about 7 o'clock on a Wednesday evening, I was beginning to start
dinner. While turning from the refrigerator, I glanced into the backyard and
was amazed to see a very large black bear. I gasped! My poor husband has learned over the years that is an ominous sound and immediately wanted to know what was wrong. I said nothing, just pushed him out of the way and made a beeline for the bedroom where I had my camera. He looked out the window and saw the bear. While I was frantically taking photos, he was calling the neighbors to brag. (It's kind of a game-who saw what, when and can prove it with a photo). Our neighbor had to see for himself and so he decided to walk over through the woods. That scared off the bear. At that point, we went outside to take down the seven feeders we had in the backyard. The idea is not to attract the bears or they will become a nuisance, so one should remove feeders from mid April to mid June. Once the feeders were down and put away we went back in to complete dinner. Imagine my surprise, when five minutes later I looked out the window and the bear was back! That's when the two photos of the bear standing up were taken. He is trying to figure out where that feeder went. All that's left is the baffle.

I had the photos processed immediately and took them to our local paper.
The following Friday, the bear photo on the right was on the center of the
front page. That evening, I received a call from Fish and Game, who borrowed
the photos for their "Something's Bruin in New Hampshire" campaign. And that was my fifteen minutes of fame. Of course, Coca Cola has their Polar Bears, and Pepsi has the dancing Grizzlies, but here in New Hampshire-our bears DO KNOW HOW TO DO THE MACARANA! (see photo on right)
