Pileus Size: (4) 5 - 9 (15) cm broad; Shape: convex, becoming plane or broadly umbonate; sometimes depressed; Color: purple, but eventually fading to purple brownish; Surface: glabrous; polished when dry; moist to dry; Margin: inrolled when young, eventually becoming uplifted; quite often wavy; Flesh: thick, soft, purplish; Odor: pleasant; faintly fragrant; Taste: pleasant.

Gills Attachment: adnate to adnexed; Color: pale purple; fading or discoloring in age; Spacing: close; Thickness: moderately broad.

Stipe Size: 3 - 8 (10) cm long; 1 - 2 cm wide; Shape: equal with a larger basal bulb; Surface: fibrillose; Color: purple to pale violet; fading somewhat with age; Consistency: stout; Flesh: solid; Basal Tomentum: consisting of downy pale purplish mycelium.

Spore Deposit: pinkish buff; Size: 6 - 8 um x 4 - 5 um; Shape: ellipsoid; Surface: minutely roughened; Miscellaneous: colorless.

Edibility: Most authorities pronounce this mushroom as an excellent edible mushroom (I have found it, but haven't tried it yet). Watch out for the possibility of confusing this mushroom with a few of the light lavender species of Cortinarious.

Habitat: From late summer through the winter where the climate allows. This is a "cosmopolitan" mushroom and can show up just about anywhere.
