Course Description

This course helps the beginning learner who has little or no knowledge of microcomputers and Internet to understand how to make the computer perform useful tasks and how to use programs to find information on the Internet. No previous knowledge of computers is necessary for success in this course. Each student will receive 15 hours of instruction and hands on lab work for a total of 6 weeks. Once finished with this course, the student may go on to using all the latest Internet search engines.

 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the student will understand:

  1. What makes the microcomputer work.
  2. How to prepare email using one of the many excellent email programs.
  3. How to find what you want from news groups or how to subscribe to mailing lists.
  4. How to find and bring in useful programs from the Internet.
  5. How to use File Transfer Protocol and Telnet.
  6. How to use a browser ... Internet Explorer®.
  7. How to use search engines ... Yahoo, Alta-vista, Dog Pile, Meta-find, and Fast Find.
  8. How to locate medical information, libraries, museums, or travel information on the Web and much more.

Workshop. Using Gopher, Telnet, FTP anonymous.

Workshop. Browsers ... Netscape, Explorer, Opera

Lesson 6

Workshop. Searching for information using the search engines ... Yahoo, Altavista, Dog Pile, Meta-find, Fast Find.
